Ported Box Tuning Question...

Ported enclosures are slightly more difficult to design than a sealed enclosure. When using a sealed enclosure, it is difficult to be so far off as to risk damaging the woofers. In any type of enclosure, the woofer relies on the enclosure for damping. If there is insufficient damping, the woofer's cone will move significantly more than it should. The ported box will provide virtually no damping below the port frequency, all of the control will be provided by the woofer's suspension. Below the tuning (port) frequency, it is possible to cause damage to the woofer well before power levels approach the maximum power ratings of the woofer.

Does this mean that the box should be tuned to the subwoofers' minimum frequency response to avoid damage? Should the box I build be tuned to 29Hz, if that is the minimum frequency response of the sub?

I want to build a vented enclosure for two subs, but I'd hate to blow one of them by screwing it up. I want to make sure I know how to do everything right before I try it out.

You should tune it to your taste in music and the desired frequency response you want.

What that sentence is saying, is that there is not much pressure when you start going below tuning and the sub starts to overexcurt. This doesn't happen right away and the stiffer the suspension, the longer it takes before anything bad can happen.

Subs will play below tuning and there will be some output but it starts to drop quickly. The real question to ask yourself is, how much music do you listen to that contains sub 25hz material.

Is there an easy way to figure out the lowest frequency most of my music plays? I'm thinking there's probably not much below 40Hz, but...I don't really know.
