Yea, build a 3ft3 box. After port/sub displacement you will be right on it.

i can fit a box that size in the back but that leaves very little room in the trunk just enough to mount the amp and cap that i have. is it ok to not have any free space left in the trunk?

In your application it will be fine.

the box will be as tall as possible and as wide as possible but it will be too deep, i will only have 5" from the woofer to the tailgate. the open space is 15tall 30wide and 5deep. is that really enough room for the sub to sound right?

The box I cam up with was 14.5 H x 20 W x 23 D with a 13x2 port 21.5 long. This will work fine for you application.

23 is a little too deep, can i widen it more and not as deep to make it have the right ft3. i can go 28 wide.
