How do you figure out how much port length you need for a certain enclosure? Dos it matter? I want to start designing my own slt ported boxes but can't seem to get a grip on how the port length works. I read the sticky on ported box design, but I didnt quite understand it.

You could try to make the port longer, but there might be other reasons with the box won't extend lower, or even the sub. You'd have to reverse...
