port position

Well, as far as port displacement, yes. You have to subtract the volume of the port, MDF and all, in your box design. As for where to point the port, that's kinda up in the air.

Like ^^ said, the port placement is specific to your application...Just make sure you have a good amount of space from the port mouth to whatever panel/seats etc...Id try the port on the same side as the sub if not, try firing it up against the rear most of the box..

Here you go. This should explain what I meant:

All of my rectangle port/vent boxes had the port on the same side as the sub. But I did have a Q-Logic box where the ports were facing up. At first I though it was stupid, then I found out that the wave that comes off the back of the sub out of the port is slightly out of phase with the wave off of the front of the sub. So now I think that porting at the top isn't a bad idea. Because the time it takes for the wave to hit off the trunk lid is less than the time it takes to hit off the back of the trunk. Unless your sub is right up on the back of the trunk. So since the wave off the back of the sub is slightly behind the front wave, maybe it helps them to hit at the same time, or closer to it.

Dunno..

thanks for all the help guys, clears lots up.

Str8up - thanks for the info. but for me me subs sit right behind the fron seats no trunk ina ext. cab truck //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif some dont like it i like it cuz its like have a back massager mmmm feel soo good and sounds soo good haha

Well, according to Jmac, a ported box works by throwing the back wave 360 degrees out of phase, so when it comes back out the port, it's directly re-enforcing the next front wave. SO, logically, wherever you point the port, would be like pointing a speaker in the same direction.

In such instances, I'd sugguest facing it in the same direction the speakers are, or straight up.

awesome, thanks everyone...today i eaither had a stroke of genious or a complete stupidity. what if i flushed the port flat with inside of the box and had it sticking out the box? something like this...//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/idea.gif.5acb6a39a9b92425414c316dda202bad.gif

yes thats my amzing complex box design..yes i know it makes no sense, but it does to me so :p reminds me of two exhaust pipes...//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif

That might just work. You'd have no port displacement, and if you did it right, you could point those babies right at your head. Just make them big enough that you can bend 'em a little bit. =p
