*** Assault Alleged Among Md. 7-Year-Olds

A first-grader at a Prince George's County elementary school was followed into a restroom by two of her male classmates last week and sexually assaulted, an attorney for her family alleged yesterday.

William Kohler, a county-based lawyer, said in a telephone interview last night that the 7-year-old girl left the playground during recess May 11 and that the boys, also 7, followed her. They threatened to harm her, he said, and "one held her down while the other performed a *** act. Then they held her on the ground and penetrated her."

Kohler declined to name the school where the alleged incident took place, but Lynn McCawley, a spokeswoman for the county school system, said it occurred at Valley View Elementary School in Oxon Hill.

McCawley confirmed that there is an investigation into the allegations but said she had no other information about the alleged attack, including whether any disciplinary action was taken against the boys. Kohler said one of the boys was back on campus less than a week after the incident, but that could not be confirmed yesterday.

Authorities did not release the names of the boys or the girl.

The boys have not been arrested or charged in the case, said Prince George's County State's Attorney Glenn F. Ivey. He said authorities are continuing to gather evidence and talk to witnesses.

"Even if the allegations are true, we're still trying to figure out the best way to approach this," he said, adding that state laws define a 7-year-old as too young to deserve blame. "There is that culpability issue. It's a very gray area between 7 and 14 years old."

Ivey said his office learned of the allegations after the girl's mother brought the matter to the attention of school officials, who in turn alerted police. He said it is a "serious issue that will be investigated and not rushed."

The girl's family is devastated, Kohler said.

"They don't want it all over the news, and they were reluctant to come forward, but they did because they haven't heard anything from the school system," he said. "They think it's being swept under the rug, and they don't want that happening now or in the future."

Kohler said the girl's mother approached school officials after she learned of the alleged assault. He said the girl was seen by a physician who confirmed for the family that she had been assaulted.

The boys were "heard bragging about it to other students," Kohler said, and the girl is terrified to return to the school. He said that her homework has been sent home to her and that she has kept up with her class work.

thats f*cked up. If the boys did do it, obviously theyve been getting some kind of wrong influence in their life.

but also, isnt the post where the reporters were fabricating stories or something? or was that a different newspaper?

Wow. Where is society headed? We'll have 12 year olds having kids. And the parents will be saying just make sure you use a condom. And next it will be if you want to do drugs at 10 yrs old that's your choice just make sure you don't take too much and make sure you do it in a safe place. Wait a second parents are already drugging their kids because they don't have time to be a parent.

where in the hell does a 7 year old even get the ideas to do shit like that? I am pretty sure that when i was 7 i didn't have a clue about the orientation of a girl's body and what different parts were used for... these kids are getting some ****ed up influences

All I see is do what feels good. What amazes me is that things have gotten so twisted that it's hard to argue a point because there is so much illogic that appears to be logic in modern times that can be used against a point. Eventually as a society we will get to a point and look around and say how did we get here? But we will be unable to reason which will prevent us from figuring out how we got where we are because of the same illogic thought process that got us there in the first place.

its sad. when i was seven i was worrying about recess, not even thinking about girls. those boys have to take get some kind of punishment. its not the same if the parents get it.

this is one of those stories that will probably be turned into "oh well they listen to eminem on the radio i bet!" even though they are seven years old. it's ****ed up the kids did it yes, but obviously parenting was not done right where it should have been. i know when i was seven like said above recess was my only worry.....oh and violin.....but thats gone haha. i don't know where these kids learned this but the parents and the kids are to blame, that is if it turns into a music is at fault case. punish the whole family of the boy.
