Popping/Distortion after adjusting gains

I went out to try to reset the gain on my 4 channel alpine for my 4 coaxial speakers. I set the gain all the way down and when I turned the stereo on, it would play and then there would be randomly timed loud popping/distortion sounds. The volume was on low, but the distortion was super loud. All of the ground seemed to be in place and the wiring checked out. Any ideas?
