POLL: Box Designers...who accounts for wood thickness

Do you use external dims when calculating?

  • yes, i use external dims when calculating the cu. ft of my boxes

  • no, i take 1.5" off of every dimension when calculating the cu. ft. of my boxes

poll doesnt even have an option for 1.5" thick MDF or triple or quadruple thick sheets.

My current box uses 2.25" thick sides and bottom so your poll is not good for all boxes.

well in those cases i know you would have to use internal because there is a HUGE diff... I dunno, I guess i was just oblivious to it since nobody has caught my error in the past...and I know i've payed for box designs on this site where that hasnt been accounted for in the design!

so again, am i over-tuned, or under-tuned?

man this is depressing... the most I can get outta my car... a frickin 4 door sedan is only 6 cu.!!

I would guess that most people "assume" you were giving the internal volume as that's the number that matters.

Use a simple port calculator and figure out how your tuning changed because of the smaller volume. Never hurts to learn a little about what you're actually doing //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

ok, well just learned that my internal volume is only like 5.5cu. ft. and my ports are all about 4" short!!.......... so I only have 5.5cu. ft MAX in a frickin 4dr. sedan... how much does that ****.. I might as well quit!

just if someone says, "how many cu. ft. is your box" wouuld you tell them the outer dimension size, or the inner dimension size?
cause when i have posted the dimensions and size of a box for a sub... nobody has EVERY caught it and been like, "hey, you said you need 6 cu. ft, but you are using the outer dimensions, which is only 5 cu. ft"
I DID!!!!!!!!!!! lol u didnt believe me.....

i have stated u have to do 2 12's for max spl or 4 10's. 4 10's would be much louder tho if powered right.

internal volume dictates the external dimensions of the box. the only time external dimensions drive the internal dimensions is when the install location has space/shape requirements.
