PLEASE tell me hes wrong

well i think that it's time for me to chime in too... you are all failing to see his (mark's) point, or at least what i think he is trying to say. fact is, the gain does change the volume. there is no arguing that. he isn't advising that everyone forget about the HU volume and run to the trunk when their favorite song comes on. if you turn your gains up, the volume goes up. yes, there might be clipping, but going from 200 to 800 watts will make things louder. especially if you amp can put out 800 clean watts.

Don't know how I have managed all this time without ya //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

But the gain doesn't affect the power output. Just at what level, it reaches that output. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

gain works the same as a volume control.... the lower the volume, the higher the gain will be to achieve the same output.

20% volume / 60% gain is pretty much the same as 60% volume, 20% gain....

"If it looks like a volume control, works like a volume control, and most importantly, controls the volume... its gotta be either an italian beef sandwich or a volume control."
eh. its word games at this point.

a gain knob, or input sensitivity control, also changes volume. but it doesn't do a good job. if i turn my gain knob down, i get minimal volume. If i turn it all the way up, i get distortion. so it affects more then just volume.

and in most cases this doesn't even matter. people who crank the gains up all the way become impressed at how the system gets loud at 10/30 and notice the distortion at 20/30. they control the amount of clipping with the HU's volume control instead of the gain knob. the issue of gains vs volumes solves itself one way or another.

i'm sure everyone reading knows all this and knows that its really just semantics and how things are used.

Alright, while i was inbetween amps, I had an MTX Thunder 152 powering my comps..... the gains were cranked up, and even at half volume, my speakers sounded like ***- they were so distorted that it would have made baby Jesus cry. So, I turned down the gain and cranked up the volume and it was very loud and clear.
gain =/= volume.
