Please Help Out A Newbie

Hello all,

I'd like to get a little bumps in my car, but when it comes to car audio, I am completely clueless. So, here's some questions :

1)I own a 2000 Eclipse and it has 6x9's in the back. Is it possible to get some bumps without throwing a box in my trunk? I do a lot of field work and my trunk is pretty full and I don't want to try to fit a box.

2)If 1 is possible, any suggestions on what I should go for?

3)If 1 is possible and with the suggestions from 2, will I also have to get a new deck? The factory deck is big, so I don't know if I'm crazy about having 1/2 the thing just the cradle.

Here's a pic (hotlinked from an ebay auction so I don't know if it will work)

It's a stock Infinity stereo. Apparently, my stereo has a factory amp also. I blew one of the rear speakers, so I bought some new 6x9's that were cheap, and they sound like crap.

Let me add that any suggestion you make will be purchased at Best Buy, so I'd appreciate it if your suggestion is also something they carry. I have ~$350 in unused gift certificates and they install right across the street from my work. I have no problem adding money, but I want to use these **** gift certificates.

Thanks!

You could find a deep spot inthe car, find a shallow mount driver and see if they would install it there. Other than that, you won't really have much luck getting subwoofer type sound.

You won't have to get a new deck, you will have to get an LOC though.

Thanks for the reply Randy.

I'm not really looking for sub type sound, just a little bumps to make me happy. My factory stereo was about where I'd like to get back to. I was hoping to do a little better, but maybe not a ton. These 6x9's that I bought though are complete dog crap. I figure if I got to spend money to replace them again, might as well look into improving at the same time.

Since I'm a complete newbie, what is LOC?

Well, what you can do to just get back to what you had or better is go with a component set from best buy as well as some sound deadening inthe front doors. If you have the money you can buy a small external amplifier and then I would imagine that would surpass the quality of your stock system.

An LOC is an acronym for Line Out Converter. An amplifier relies on a singnal sent from the head untit via RCA's. A stock head unit usually does not have pre-out's to hook an amplifier up to, so an LOC is a box with RCA outs and two extending wires. These wires are tapped into one of the speaker lines and converts the signal. Then, you can hook up an amplifier. If you ask the tech at BB he could probably explain it a little better.

Let me look at the BB website and see what I think would be good as far as components.

Do you usually drive alone? And even if you do not, do you primarily care about how the system sounds to you, or your passengers as well? If you primarily care about only your sound, then it is recommended that you take out all but the front speakers. That way, you have no interference from the rear speakers.

Thanks again for the replies Randy.

First off, money really isn't an option. I just mentioned it had to be at Best Buy since I can get things installed while I'm at work and I also have $350 in unused gift certificates laying around.

It's hard for me to find any info on my current stock stereo, but it looks like it's a 210 watt system and it is infinity speakers all around (except I replaced the rear 6x9's with Kenwoods).

I'm not really concerned with others liking my stereo, it's really only for my enjoyment. I do usually fade the sound to the rear though as to me, it's always sounded better. This of course changed with these cheap *** replacement speakers I purchased.

For LOC, is this "Direct plug in adapter to replace factory head unit or amp" something that you were talking about?

BTW, tell the rain to stay away //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif I'm be in Prince Frederick on the Chesapeake Monday-Wednesday doing some field work.
