please help me out with my system

hi guys,

im trying to build my first system... i went ahead and bought some subs (used) because it seemed like a good deal on them - 2 JL 12W6s (the originals, not V2s) because i want this to be a quality set up, and nobody says anything bad about JLs.

Unfortunately these subs are a little different from most - they don't seem to be very "standard." The owners manual says that the nominal impedance is "dual 6 ohms"and the power handling (continuous) is 300W. Im sure a lot of other people have had these subs.

I'm just having a hard time figuring out how how im going to drive them - my original plan was to just get a JL 1000/1 amp to drive them both, but my deal on that fell through and im left looking at other options. Im trying to learn about ohms and impedance and how all that works so i can select a good amp but im just getting myself really confused. I can't find out much about stuff that runs at 6 ohms and this is my first system, so i dont know much about series or parallel wiring or bridging an amplifier. I just dont know what my options are.

My question to every one is what kind of amplifier should i get?

If i want to run both the subs off of one amp what will i need? - mono/dual channel, wattage rating etc. the 6 ohms is just confusing me and i want to do this right.

Or, would it be better to run each sub off of a seperate amp? what would i need for that?

Im sure other people out there have used 2 JL 12w6s - could you post how you set up your systems? Thanks a lot to everybody in advance

Hmmm, I dunno what kind power they need to get going honestly. I'd think that if ya wired em at 1.5ohms to like a 1200d and a proper box, that you'd be good to go.

so i would wire them like this to a 1200d (are you talking about an Orion amp? are orion amps decent/ will they work well with the JL subs? i don't know anything about them.)

if you are talking about an orion amp, it would be a mono channel amp - rated at 1200 watts into 1 ohm - how much power would this be sending to the subs at 1.5 ohms? ~800 watts? how many watts are each of the subs drawing at 1.5 ohms - if they are 300 watts rms at 6 ohms, what is the wattage at 1.5 ohms?

im just confusing myself some more.

The possiblilities are endless as far as what amps to run. But since you are already talking mono just stick w/ that. At 1.5 ohms you would be getting greater than 1000 watts. Orion is quality product and you will not have any issues with it. You will have to be very careful not to over power the subs though. You may want to consider a slightly smaller amp if the max power handling on your subs is less than 500 watts each. The subs will handle 300 watts RMS no matter how they are wired.

so basically any amp that is 1 ohm stable and provides around 600 -700 watts at 1.5 ohms will work - ill just wire the two subs in parallel and ill be good?

anyone wanna recommend a good amp for this - i know there are lots of possibilities - im just wondering what is a decent brand to go with these subs but wont break my bank at the same time (no more than $400)

darth, how are you figuring out the wattage that orion amp puts out at 1.5 ohms?

Blunt, are you sure these subs will handle 500 watts? they arent the v2s...

thanks guys

okay im trying to make some choices about an amp:

i'm liking the looks of an Orion 1200d - is this too powerful, or can i set the gain lower to keep from overpowering the subs? it would also give me the option of adding another sub later (but i won't do this for quite a long while im sure). if this amp would be bad for running two subs please tell me

also thinking about a Rockford Fosgate Power T10001bd, which would be a little bit less power the Orion. i know these are good amps from what ive read and heard about them. would this be a good choice? or still too much power at the 1.5 ohm load. these are also a bit more expensive, so if anyone can recommend some cheaper alternatives i'd appreciate it!

another amp i've run across is the Directed D800. i don't know anything about directed... can anyone tell me anything about the brand, and whether or not this would be a good amp to run? its one ohm stable, and the wattage seems close to appropriate.

would i be better off just going with a two channel amp? i was sticking with mono because i was having a hard time figuring out the what the impedance would be if i wired each sub to a different channel - would each sub (wired seperately to each channel, parallel) run at 3 ohms? if so, would the amp see 6 ohms coming from both channels or what... i really dont know what im talking about - maybe someone could explain how i could drive the subs from a dual channel amp, or if i should just stick with the mono

if you got the money, go with the RF. they look nicer too //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
