Playing with a "Blown" Atomic APX18

So I believe my motor shifted from me dropping it a while back lol. No worries, as a local shop can shift it back into place for super cheap. For this reason though, the coil rattles like a mofo, it has got to be on my list of top 10 worst noises ever //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif But given that I have been saving up to recone her to the original Atomic soft parts, I decided to toy around with her.

Free air, Bass I Love You, and as much power as my ears could take (the rattling noise is about 20 times louder and more annoying in person). When I smashed my hand on it to try and shift it a little, things got more fun. On the 18hz note, you can tell my whole body gets shaken to pieces by it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif Then I tried The Blow, and it sounded so bad that I just gave up.

I'm going to get someone to hold the camera for me and take more videos later with more power (and earmuffs!). Enjoy!

So the coil is rubbing against the center pole or the magnet right? Won't playing it get metal shavings all inside the coil gap?

Maybe. I can get it out though. If I could get magnet shavings out of a Cyclone, I can get them out of this lol

Hahahaha noooooo they are just know for their magnets falling apart slowly. The dust accumulates in the assembly and makes a similar noise to my APX18. It happens to every Cyclone, whether they are used often or just sitting.

If the topplate was shifted the coil/cone would be locked up...

Hmmm. Well looking in, the gap seems bigger on one side than the other, but it's not a big enough difference to seize it. Maybe you're right though! If so, what would the noise be from? I didn't find any dust or what not inside, and both coils read perfect.

A portion of the windings may have become detached from the former... but its hard to say without looking at in person...

good call! that's probably what it is. The former is the sleeve that goes between the pole and the coil, right?

i realign alot of top plates on motor assemblys. sometime the top plate catches on a glue bead and wont pinch the coil totally off and the coil will just rub really bad and buzzz. it is really bad to play like this because you can blow ur amp. if you want to finish it plug it in the wall...
