Hi, I have a Pioneer AVH-P4000DVD mounted indash in truck. It has a usb adapter to where you can plug in a flash drive with music on it and plays fine, but i bought a power inverter so i could plug in an external hard drive in the car, and it hooks up usb as well but my problem is when i got to use what is connected on usb (which would now be my external hard drive) it gives me "error 23"

I know most flash drives are formatted as Fat32, and my external hard drive was NTFS. So i unpartitioned the hard drive and reformatted using Fat32 and copied the music back to the hard drive, and still same error.

Any ideas?

Hard drive is 120gb, Fat32, USB2.0 Enclosure.

Power inverter is 400w ( should be enough power to run it fine)

Look up what error 23 means in your avh manual. I think there is a limit on how large the ext hd can be for it to read but I'm not sure.

For alot of devices, including headunits, just because it is usb does not mean every usb mass storage device will work. There is probably a maximum size limit to what you can hook up.

the radio only puts out 500mA, you need a full amp for a 2.5" harddrive some 1.8" work fine but 2.5 needs external power

That's not correct. I have communicated with Fujitsu Sweden about one of their 2.5" drives, and you are able to power it through the USB cable. There are others as well. However, he aired some concern about the car coupé being too harsh an environment for a HD, he recommended a stick instead. But as long as you know that the drive will have no less than 500 mA, you should be OK. you can not go under 500 mA. If you want to be on the safe side, I am shure there are "add ons" also for Pioneer, that will garantee you adequate power, starting well under 10 US (at least it starts there here).

It can be another problem though. Three different makers all said in their manuals that the drive must comply with the "USB class mass storage device" standard or something in that direction for the drive to be able to work with their HUs.

They also all had requirements how you organize the folders on the HD and so forth. I recommend you download the manual to see if all the requirements adds up.

o i have the manule for the Pioneer and Error 23 is in the USB section and states

USB device is not ormated with FAT16 or FAT32 and in the box next to that is says USB Device should be formatted with FAT16 or FAT32

sorry i cant be more help thats all the manule said about Error 23

Are you saying you did just a partition of it in FAT32? Or the whole thing? I can get in touch with some of the product development team at Pioneer, so if you'll get me the details on the drive, then I'll find out for you.

And according to previous talks with them, it's rare that enclosure + bare HDD works. Something to do with the universal controller that they use not being acceptable as a true USB Mass Storage Class device.

Get a 100watt dc to ac outlet thats what i did i had 1T HD in my car,, I don't reconmend it cuz people that walk buy it looks pricey and gives a eye to theives. Just get a 16 gig flash drive thats what i use

That was what I was going to suggest. Some of the bigger external hard drives come pre-formatted as NTFS whereas others are FAT 16 or 32.
