ok just a little bit of a weird problem, when i eject the CD all the lights and display text shut off, when i put a cd back in, it all comes back on. is this model suppose to do this, or have i wired something incorrectly?

hmm never used a 390mp. Does it have a removable face? Check the connection it is making to the rest of the unit and make sure it is secure on there. I have seen a lot of Sony headunits have a face problem with that connection but Pioneers usually are pretty reliable.

Is the unit actually shutting off or just the display?

When you eject it and all the lights are off, press the clock button. They should all come back on again.

does it switch to radio when you pull a cd out?
