phone line outputs?

So when you looking at one of those boxes with all the phone lines are in them; about how many are there??? How do you know whos is whos?
Also, say a house has never had a phone line (has no copper to it) and wants one, do you run a line from the houses De-mark spot all the way back to the Central office? Or where...

The peds and closures that give me access to the phone lines will usually have cable comming in and cable going out the number of wires in that cable may very from 11 pairs to 1800+ pairs (pair = 2 wires representing 1 phone line) It is all color coded and asigned cable counts in the records. For example if I am in a 300pr cable looking for pr 137, that pr would be the Black/Orange pair in Blue/Red binder (binder=25 pairs).

When we install at a new house we run a line from the demarc to our nearest facility access which would be a ped/closure usually in an ally or street corner. The cables have enough lines in them to allow for growth and expansion.

Alright let me ask this question then. My local phone company (bellsouth) has just recently put in this concrete pad with I think 3 boxes on it which is nearly at the end of my yard. What are these boxes and what are they for? Im sure youve already mentioned it before but im just curious here.

Could be a remote Hut (Ria) a sac box (RAN) and a splice case or maybe even a repeater or a power box for the remote hut.

a remote hut is basically a small switching station that is fed by fiber or T-lines. A sac box is just a point to make cross connects from one line to another. splice case is just a point were 2 or more cables are spliced up, A repeater is for T-lines and special cercuits usually placed no more then a mile appart.

Hmm I dunno, I just wish they would hurry up and get DSL internet service out here my way. Im on stupid dial up and the best numbers I can pull are 26.4 kpbs. But I do know that my nearest central office or whatever you want to call it building is about 7-8 miles away.

I edited the post before with more content. If It happens to be a UMC1000 pair gain hut fed by fiber and has digital pair gain (DPG) in it then they are probably setting it up so your area can have DSL or it may be some other type of pairgain that can handle DSL, But from what I have seen in my area only the UMC fed by fiber can handle DSL.

My purpose is just for a schematic I saw and I think it would be a cool thing to build. Also, I just think phones are interesting, how and why they work.. so gaining some basic knowledge on them wouldnt be a bad idea..

bump bump bump

Gotta keep this thread going. It's very interesting! Phoneman is "The Man"!
You make me feel so special //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif But its just what I do. There is a lot of stuff to it but not any more then a lot other careers. But in my proffesion even the guys that have 20+ yrs in the field are always learning somthing new that they have never expeirenced before.

So if I do want to tap into a power and ground (neg.) of a telephone line would using like a Y splitter type of thing be what I want?
Its not a power and ground, its nothing like electricity or car audio. It is refered to a Tip side and a Ring side that carries -48v to -52v DC. But if you must refer to a + and a - then consider the Ring side + and the Tip side - . Most all equipment will work no matter what the polarity is. You should be able to use a 1 line splitter (Y splitter) if all you need is a point to tap into the phone line for you project.

Ooo... i seee.. I'm just looking at this schematic and its giving me a + and -... So now reeffering to ring side and tips side, how would I identify those wires? Thanks again!

Hav you looked inside of a phone jack, the phone box or at any of the wiring? Inside your jack, your Network Interface (phone box on outside of house), and phone cords the Tip side (-) will be green and the Ring side (+) will be red. Most inside phone wire (IW, the wire that goes from the network interface to the phone jacks inside house) is also that way with some exceptions.

Hey Phoneman,
How many different level/postions are there for phoneguys? What are they, what do they each do??
Oh man, My company has all type of job titles and pay scales. I am an I&R (instalation & repair) Tech (CST) It is in the top payscale as far as non-managment. There are several others in the same payscale such as construction (splicers), Central Office Techs, Pair-Gain Techs, Specials Techs and several more. Then there are also Coin techs (payphones) which are a grade or two below us along with locators, frame attendents and other stuff that I cant think of. Not to mention all the Office jobs there are.

1st line management makes 5%+ more then my base pay but they work on salary and I work by the hour so most all of us techs make way more then our boss and sometimes our boss's boss (2nd line manager) at the end of the year because of our overtime pay.
