For 99% of beginners, I can recommend a simple full body workout, 3 day per week, 45 min. per day routine that will get results (assuming all other factors are good to go... rest, nutrition, etc.).
People make it too complicated too early. Don't go pick up a flex magazine and start following those routines.
(BB = barbell)
BB squat (or leg press)
BB row (or pullups)
BB bench press (or dips)
BB overhead/military press
Calf raises
^ would work well.
