PC piracy no more

lets see, it'll require a new bios, which can be circumvented by overwriting a new one that doesnt even start up the chip, and or the chip itself just being removed from the board.

I saw we need to attack this problem--not just game piracy, but all piracy--like we have the drug problem. We need a war on piracy!!

We need LONG sentences in prison to deter these people. We need secretive police agencies who go undercover to find these scumbags and lock them up!

Most importantly we need politicians who will stand up to the constitution and give law enforcement the tools it needs to get this heinous problem under control.

According to Atari founder Nolan Bushnell, PC game piracy will be a thing of the past thanks to new stealth encryption chips embedded in your computers.
"There is a stealth encryption chip called a TPM that is going on the motherboards of most of the computers that are coming out now," he added.

"What that says is that in the games business we will be able to encrypt with an absolutely verifiable private key in the encryption world - which is uncrackable by people on the internet and by giving away passwords - which will allow for a huge market to develop in some of the areas where piracy has been a real problem."

Bushnell did note however that movie and music piracy can not be stopped. "If you can watch it and you can hear it, you can copy it."

"Games are a different thing, because games are so integrated with the code. The TPM will, in fact, absolutely stop piracy of gameplay.

"As soon as the installed base of the TPM hardware chip gets large enough, we will start to see revenues coming from Asia and India at a time when before it didn't make sense."

what do you think of that?
It'll never fly ...
First of all, no one who's into PC gaming would buy motherboards w/ these chips, so all of the motherboards aimed at enthusiasts won't have these chips.

Secondly, if they do implement it mainstream, software companies will invest less money into their DRM and anti-piracy measures, making it even easier for those who buy enthusiast motherboards to pirate the games.

Thirdly, I don't know if you've seen the backlash over the last couple of years due to DRM, but TONS of LEGITIMATE PURCHASERS have been screwed over while those who download the cracked version get a better experience than those who bought the legal copy.

If there is a hacker that's able to beat it, they'll just hire him to be security and pay him hundreds of thousands to show them how to prevent hackers from breaking their stuff. New hackers will keep coming out, but they'll end up employing the best ones, it always happens that way...
seems to be working very well at the moment.

I'm really thinking that this is the start of AI. I mean wow, a chip that prevents hacking. What will we do?

*GASP*

Oh, yeah, the same people who built that will reverse engineer it, build a dongle or even a bios change that turns it off or tricks it and business as usual.
