painting fiberglass enclosures

you dont clearcoat or wax the box? just buff? how does it hold up to banging into it? wouldnt it would be easy to chip up like that?

That particular box used enamal exterior automotive paint. It is quite sturdy and has yet to chip. Been 2 years.

The rest of the painted interior in that truck uses the same paint. As well as the upcoming stuff.

Clearcoating is subject to the paint used.

And on all my interior painted peices, I suggest using the Meguires Quik Detail Spray Mist and a very soft cloth. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Before priming, I wetsanded at like 500, 1000, then 2000.

Thats way overkill and more work than is needed. If it works good for ya, thats great and don't let anyone tell you its the wrong way.

Personally I sand the filler down with 60 - 80 grit, prime with Slick Sand Filler primer to fill in pin holes and minor inperfections. Then sand that with 180, then 220. Then add paint.

I don't know if it matters to ya, but my 200 - 220 sanding is done wet, so it is not rough at all. And high quality paper is used.

I have painted boxes that show it is not too rough for paint.

EDIT ::: You seen the box in that truck saywhat?, it wasn't rough.

why? you use a liberal coat of primer to fill in holes so over 400 grit before priming is a waste of energy you wont see it because the primer kills all your hard work. let the primer do its job as a filler.

Look at an autobody website, it is the same as painting a corvette (fglass car)

And to respond the 2000 grit sandpaper, it may be overkill but you almost surely should use 1500 if you want things to be shiny like the rest of your car. As a last note, if you can feel a scratch in the surface with your fingers you will be able to see it from 10' away. Car paint is picky.

on the bondo? I think you might of missed we were talking about pre priming. primer will kill any sanding finer than 400 grit just from the thickness of the primer.
