P880 Install Problems

Hello to everybody,

I've been reading around here and been trying to make myself smarter in many different ways, but I just can't seem to figure out my problem. I hope to find a solution here.

I got a (new) Premiere P880 that I would like to have in my '04 RAM. When I got the truck, I already had a system in there, but the head unit gave up on me. I have a Punch 1800 that drives two JL 12" and an Eclipse EA2212 that drives the speakers in the doors.

Now, the problem that i get with the new HU is that I have tons of static when turned on (engine not running). I can clearly hear rustling in the speakers when I tap or even just slightly move the ground wire. Then, when I turn the power off, I get a loud thump from the subs. All in all not a pleasant experience.

Somebody told me the HU could be bust, but I have no way of checking and I can't return it either. So I hope someone here can point out the right bottle in the medicine cabinet. Thank you guys very much!!!

Yes, indeed it does. And of course I have engine noise in it too. But I'm primarily concerned about the loud thump in the subs; I don't want the membrane to crack.

90% chance you popped the ground plane fuse.. its a .5 amp fuse between the rca ground and the h/u ground on the board of the deck.. Requires a good bit of skill in soldering boards to fix..

If your unit is under warranty then you can have it fixed, otherwise ground the shields on the rca's somewhat like this

obviously the 880 has a pigtail for the rca's but that gives you an idea of what to do..

Mine had the same problem. i grounded the rca's and the noise was gone.

All right, I tried what profundus-sanus suggested and it worked just fine for the subs. Thanks for the tip, the loud thump is gone! But the noise in the speaker connected to the eclipse amp is still there. I can hear the noise from the CD spinning in the speakers. And I have engine noise. AND I hear a short buzz when I turn on the lights. Considering that it worked for the RCAs for the sub, I have this suspicion that it might be the other amp that's causing it. Could that be?

I just realize that I did not ground them like you. I gave each duo a separate ground wire to a different location. You think if I ground them to the outer casing like you, it could make a difference?

i just ran one long wire and wrapped it around all of them, then electrical taped them together into a bundle... So all the wires were grounded in the same spot... and the wire wouldn't get pulled off.

Not sure if that might be your problem or not, but if it took the noise out of the wooferz then it would be worth a shot.
