Overwhelmed by Selection

It's obvious this dudes not looking for #'s so the interpratation of SPL in this thread just means loud. His OP clearly states what he's looking for so I'm applying the term SPL as loosely as he is in order for him to understand
@iHertz

I am more than pleased with my equipment and my ratio of loudness:clarity. Although you'll always want more bass....I've yet to understand this
my point was that the system is dependant on the box more than the sub. the sub should be the second step when designing a sub system from scratch.

people use all different types of subs for spl. some subs work better sealed, some work better ported, and some work fairly well in either. putting a sub designed to be sealed in a ported box is an innefficient way to get good bass from a ported system. first thing to decide is how much room you have for the sub. if you only desire to lose a small space, then a system design that is sealed might be your direction. or possibly a smaller sub ported.
When it comes to room available, I have a lot. The trunk in this car is massive. Good for at least a few bodies.

Can you explain the main difference between ported & sealed? How would I go about knowing what sub belongs in what type of enclosure to ensure maximum performance?

Just going to quickly toss out some suggestions for equipment

Amps:

-Sundown 1500D-2000D

-Sundown 100.4

Subwoofer

-Waaaay too many possible candidates to list

Components

-Hertz obviously (whatever you can afford)

Headunit

-Check

Wires

-Knu Konceptz (seen some sketchy stuff from their RCA's though)

Sound deadening

- Rudy over @ SDS is extremely helpful and has some badass products

Have fun!

you probably have room to do some 12's ported, or maybe a 15, if you are willing to lose most of your trunk. are you putting the sub(s) in a prefab box? if so, id stick to sealed.

If you can build your own box my recommendation so far (obviously not perfect, but gives you something to look into) would be:

AQ1200d -249

DC Level 4, Fi BL, Fi Q, AQ HDC , SSA Icon (12" or 15") -300

Hertz HSK comps up front. -300

JL 300/2 -150 to 300 (used vs. new)

So you'd be at 1000-1150 before wiring and deadening. 6x9's obviously not included as I prefer only a front stage. If you do indeed want 6x9's, then a MB Quart DSC450.4 could work wonders for you in place of the more expensive JL 300/2. the DSC is very inexpensive and does rated.

likes about 800to 1000rms its their spl sub but it sound amazing its an amazing sub, hertz is just usually very exspensive here in the states by buddy at srq customs in sarasota is a dealer

I didn't want to lose the full trunk. Not even half to tell you the truth. I am aiming for one 12". I have a ported box that used to house my 12" Punch.

Would you recommend a custom box for this fresh setup? I know box's aren't cheap.

is the old punch box custom? the box will make or break your system. a 1000 dollar sub in a crappy box will sound like 50$.

Old Punch box is prefab & came with that 12". I'm thinking I should go with a fresh box. I knew it was a big deal, just not this big. Learning as I go along, you guys have really been great. Thank you so much. Don't be shy, keep it coming!

Please build a fresh box to accommodate whatever sub you decide on. Build it yourself and it'll be about $50 in materials //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Or I have a 12" box that's already built to house a DC Level 4 12" or something similar. 1.7 internally with a 4" aero tuned ~32hz. PM me if interested. Just sitting in my house taking up space. On second thought, shipping to Toronto might be a little excessive //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

someone on here might build you a box for relatively cheap. that hertz sub in a well designed/built ported box will probably be more bass than youd ever need for daily listening.

I will most def be checking this stuff out. Thank you sir. From goalie to goalie //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif Are you saying that the 6x9 aren't really doing much back there? Matter of preference?

I tend to look at it like this. Our ears are designed to take in sound from in front of us. You don't go to a concert and turn your back to the stage to listen to the music. You want to face it to really get the most of it.
