Overpowering subs...need info

I have 2 JBL GTO1004D 10 inch subs. They are rated at 1000 watts max, 250 watts rms. I am looking to step down to something without as much bass. I would like to run a single 10 for a week or so to see if it provides the sound I am looking for, and if so, that will be the size of my next woofer. Going by the birthsheet, my amp puts out 580 watts. Is there anything I can do to allow me to run one of my JBL's on that amp? How would I wire it to be safe? I am new at this so forgive my ignorance, thanks a lot.

OK, so main thing is volume levels. If the type and loudness of the bass suits me, I will be getting a single 10 with 2 ohm coils so that I could run my amp at a 4 ohm load bridged. When I hook this JBL up, should I wire it into one channel or bridge it into 2? Thanks.

Like some said just turn down the subs. You can do this easily by turning down your gain (level) on the amp. Just turn your volume up to normal listening levels, then use a screwdriver to adjust the gain down to what sounds good for you. No need to get new subs or anything.

You dont like both subs turned down a bit?

Maybe if you are putting it in a different enclosure it will sound different, otherwise same as turning down gain. and gaining more space which might be the real reason.

I am not sure exactly what I want, just that what I have doesnt suit me. I was suggested the JBL's, and purchased them before doing homework. I have played with the gain and bass knob, along with the settings on my HU. I have no clue what I am doing, so I am playing with them little by little to see what I like. The sound is OK, dont get me wrong. I just think that for 200 bucks I could have done better. I was gonna try sell my JBL's, then invest in one decent sub so that I would have better overall quality. That is the main reasoning behind this switch. I will continue to play with my setting tomorrow to see what I can discover, along with trying one sub to see if I like that any better. I am located in Russellville, and I was gonna get stuff at the local shop but they only push kicker, which I hear isnt what I need. I really appreciate you all trying to save me time , effort, and money. Thanks a lot.

I have a 4 runner, so space isnt a big issue, although it would be nice. I was told that a prefab SEALED can be just as good as a custom SEALED box, so I went that route to save money. The box does match the recommended .75 cu. ft. per sub. Here is the enclosure I currently have: http://www.proboxrocks.com/products/enclosures/unloaded/hatchback/210HB/index.shtml

Thanks.
pre fab boxes are what they are they are not made for every sub the enclosure is what makes a sub sound its best
