optima question

Well....if the battery is good and you know that than resting voltage would be ok to use.

But only after a load test by autozone or what not.

But yes....my NSB125 rests at 12.9, but i know its bad...put a load on it and goes to 9ish

yes it is worthless, did you read my post?
No it is not worthless. It is a very good first indicator. Would you consider buying a battery that rested at 5.0v? Why not? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

define depth
I have seen batteries meter 12.8 and as soon as you put a load on them drop significantly.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif
Depth as in this chart:

Depth-of-charge.jpg

like i said, I could throw a high amp jumpstart on on about any car battery and it could show 12v but have like 6amps, like the op's batteries
Not true. Not all batteries will accept a surface charge. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

I just took like 4 batteries to the recycler last month. Maybe I should have charged them and posted pics of over 12v on the dmm and sold them on here.
I bet people who would follow your advice would be willing to buy them. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif

digital load testers are only lik $100 anyways but most people just wont have much use for them
Digital load testers are crap. You need a carbon pile load tester to truly test a battery.

anyone with half a brain wouldnt buy a 12v battery that reads 5v

not 100% but most will

following you advice every battery that reads above 12v is good //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

orly? Every dealership I have worked at has had one, in fact they were required for warranty reasons. I guess billion dollar companies who build and engineer cars use worthless test equipment.

If they only hold a max voltage of 12.6v they are probably not good. They should charge up to at least 12.8v with a full charge. Anything less shows that the batteries are either stratified or sulfated.
your OG post

so based on resting voltage you know if this mans batteries are bad?

The point was made that battery voltage is useless, yet you say you would not buy a 12v battery that rested at 5v. Isn't that somewhat of a contradictory statement?

Battery voltage is very important. It does not tell you everything. But I can assure you that a battery without a full charge, regardless if it is stratified or sulfated, or if it is a perfectly good battery, will not provide the amperage it is rated for.

So in order to determine whether or not a battery is good, you must first fully charge the battery. Then you must properly load the battery. Tell me how that hand held digital load tester is going to apply a real 500a load to my battery? It can't. It is that simple.

what i just ordered. They can and do. Prices have dropped a bunch on them. I had to order one cause I am laid off and cant use the shop's anymore lol. But theirs was a really expensive peice that ran you through a bunch of cycles like, idle, engine not on, every accesory on, run car for an hour, etc. It even had its own wireless printer that printed out a sheet that had all the results, temps., etc

edit i only use spx/otc/miller test equipment because i have worked at Chrysler dealerships and that is what Chrysler uses and requires, so I trust it.

Yeah those might work fine for flooded starting batteries, but I have never sen one that worked well on deep cycle AGM batteries. A carbon pile tester is by far a superior device. It actually load tests the battery.

a bunch of chrysler vehicles come with optima red tops factory and this is what is recommended. Its not like chrysler says hey get this test equipment, they just send it and the dealer has to pay for it or they are no longer a new car dealership.

Well what I can tell you is the hand held testers are simply testing the resistance of the battery as an indicator of battery health. That in no way can ever fully replace a true load test. They should not even be called a load tester. They should call them a battery health tester.

So when you advocate that battery voltage means nothing, yet you claim a simple resistance test is the Holy Grail of battery tests, forgive me if I raise this flag:
