One SA-8 enough?

Why SA-8? I say 10" Dayton Reference HO. The SA-8 is incredibly inefficient.
I was and still am considering that exact sub actually. I did not know the SA-8 was that inefficient. Tell me more. Tell me more. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/naughty.gif.94359f346c0f1259df8038d60b41863e.gif

I'm guessing the dayton would be more musical?

SA-8: 78dB 1W/1m

RSS265HO-4: 84dB 1W/1m (don't be confused by the 87dB 2.83v/1m rating... that's 84dB @ 1w/1m for 4 ohm speakers)

And Dayton Reference has some of the lowest distortion around. It WILL sound better than the SA-8... period.

Another recommendation I have if you want small and just some bass augmentation: Peerless SLS. Cheap, good quality, decent output. Not gonna equal either the RSS or the SA-8 in output capability, won't equal the RSS in sound quality, but one or two SLS 8" will be enough for 95% of people.

Part of the appeal of the SA-8 was seeing what I could do with a single 8... everyone here thinks they need two 12s to have any bass //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif and I've been wanting to try one for months.

Box smallness is another thing - twould be nice to on the lighter side (prefer aeroport cuz plastic is lighter than mdf) she's an MPG queen and I don't wanna wreck her gas mileage //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

Dammit I wish I could hear these in person. Why do most shops **** so much a$$?!?

The SA-8 does have good output capability for an 8" for sure... It's just that when you achieve your output with more cone area and less by stroke, you get higher efficiency and less distortion. The motor of a subwoofer is not perfectly linear - especially overhung subs like Sundown. As it moves, the strength of the motor changes and creates distortion. The Dayton has more linearity than the SA-8 to begin with, due to motor design, and it also has to move less to provide the same output due to the cone area increase, further increasing sound quality.

The SA-8 isn't bad for what it is, but it's not a driver that I personally would recommend.

In the case of the Dayton, you will get free shipping to you and the Parts Express return policy is awesome. If you don't like it, you are only out the return shipping. I returned two woofers to P-E last week, and will be returning two more this week. No restocking fee, unlike Fi who have a 30% restocking fee. (Ridiculous much? I will never be ordering from them again.)

Go with your gut feelin, get the SA-8. Everyone has good things to say about them. One will be plenty loud for your girlfriend, you said she only turns it up 1/3.

Wow 30%. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif

Thanks I had no idea about a lot of this mr. Dragon. I just read a review of the dayton... SQ and all that jazz...

Gah decisions. Ill have to see what is available on da forums and do more research...

Do a little thinking for yourself... When everyone makes recommendations based on this then you end up with a forum that simply has a boner for a specific brand (or a few brands). Have you ever stopped to consider any REAL reasons to use various equipment? This forum, like most car forums, is too full of "in"/trendy brands... We had Fi, and now a lot have moved to DC Audio and Sundown and stuff... But why?

One of the reasons I personally love sundown is because of how hard jacob works to create bulletproof products... he's an awesome guy and very helpful too. Takes time out of his busy day to answer your questions.

But gah I dono. Wish I could hear em.

Note: I am not hating on them. It's just that 8" subwoofers are ALWAYS a compromise due to the low cone area, and I don't think their value is good compared to Dayton. And they are overhung, which is simply not my style. I never said they ******. They are impressive 8"s, but not that great subwoofers in general.

I honestly for 100$ on the sub I wouldnt buy used my freinds gf has 2 kicker 12in comps in a sealed box shes got 100$ for the pair new of sonicelectronix with a rockford fosgate 200w punch amp, with a knukonceptz 8 gauge amp kit, with a alpine deck it sounds very clean and is not overly loud.

He even said in his first post that he was thinking about running a sundown sub. No one is getting a boner here at all. I dont even own any sundown equipment, yet I still know they are a great company.
