I think I bought the wrong amp :\

MTX Thunder 282

280W x 1 @ 14.4V

How do I run it at 14.4V? Does this depend on the head unit?? Please say no lol! My head unit says like 12v for daily operation. Omg no this can't be happening I wanted to get my system done this weekend...

that 280 watt rating is if your alternator produces 14.4 volts then your amp will put out 280 watts.

But it says my head unit is only capable of 12volts or something in the manual.. Does this matter? How can I tell what my alternator produces? I hate being noob.

14.4 volts is the optimum amount of volts a normal battery runs at it can drop to 12v or lower with no prob.

K sry.. But that difference from 180 rms at 12v to 280rms at 14.4 is a big diff to my system. Just making sure this is gonna work. Thanks

your car is 14.4v WHEN RUNNING (unless somthing is incredibly wrong) and 12v when off.

id assume the cd-player has a regulated 12v powersupply (only accepts 12v, even if the supply voltage (14.4) is higher)

Ok, that is where I get confused... If the CD-Player is only accepts 12v then how the hell am I gonna get 14.4v to my amp?

A fused power wire from battery to amp.....your amp isnt powered from your HU*only remote wire which turns the amp on /off when you turn the HU on/off*

Just my two cents but not all alts run at 14.4 volts. ford alts do. but like chevy i beleive run at 13.8. But no the 12v the remote turn on which is just a constant 12v to tell the amp to turn on. nothing else. The 14.4 the amp is talking about is the power it's pulling from the battery, aka power wire.

I couldn't remember the chevy part completly, but i know for a fact now all alts are regulated at the same voltage.

ok. heres the deal.

the BATTERY WIRE will be supplying anywhere from 12v to 14+change. average power though this wire (batt wire) is 13.5~14.5 - this has NOTHING to do with the CD player.

the CD player accepts 12v, it has a regulated pwersupply, so if it gets 14.4v- it will cut it down to 12v.

both the CD player AND the amp are run from the CAR BATTERY AND ALTERNATOR. they have nothing to do with each other EXCEPT that the CD player has a thin blue wire that goes to the amp (by coincidence its 12v) that ONLY tells it when to be on and when to be off. this has nothing to do with the wattage or anything of the sort. the other cables that go from the cd player to the amp are the AUDIO CABLES, and again- has nothing to do with the wattage (cept matchin the gain wich is a whole different story all together)

the manual will tell you what the deal is. but you have to read it with some common sense, and a bit of knowledge.

so dont worry about it.
