Old speakers with good bass?

I have a pair of 6.5" Alpine 6838 - 3 way, 35 watts RMS, that are 12 years old (top of the line at the time). These things put out very decent bass.

I was wondering why the bass response is more pronounced than my CL-62s and much, much better than the pair of Alpine SPS-170s I just got rid of. Does it have anything to do with my Kicker amp rated at 35 watts RMS?

PS, I have no door deadening, only MDF spacers and fabricated rain protection surrounding the driver.

Maybe the older speakers were more effecient and put out more bass at lower wattages.

Perhaps your right, in my quest for better sound quality, I can't help but wonder.
