Well, yea, but the better Class D amps out there today still have power in reserve for when it is needed for dynamic headroom. And I agree, the biggest factor in amps failing from any era is user idiocy.

Indeed but I'm not talking about class D. There are many many many good Class D amps. But few comparable Class A/B amps to a lot of the old school amps.
Class D pwns A/B in efficiency and power but not in full range or THD (SQ).
Why do you need class A/B, for use on a sub stage Class D is perfectly fine, and actually provides advantages over Class A/B because of it's efficiency and smaller size. For anything above 100Hz reproduction Class A/B is definitely desired however.
