Ohm Question

Ok, This ohms stuff had me confused for a while, But I Think I got it figured out. I just want to make sure though.

I have a 12" Alpine Type-R 1242D which is rated at 500w RMS.

I want to get this amp; Hifonics BXi 1606D Which has the following specs.

# RMS Power (4 ohms) 550 watts x 1 chan.

# RMS Power (2 ohms) 1100 watts x 1 chan.

# RMS Power (1 ohm) 1600 watts x 1 chan.

First, 550w RMS is not too much for a 500w RMS rated Sub right?

Second, I want to wire it up for 4ohms for now as I have a single sub correct? And if I ever add one I would want to wire it for 2 ohms to keep it as close to 500w's a sub?

Right, check the sticky at the top of the page for a tutorial on setting ur gain to make sure ur sub only see's 500 watts (or 550). I have heard people running 1,000 rms+ to a Type-R. Wire it to 2ohms, then set ur gains correclty so the sub isn't seeing more then 500-600rms. But if u ever decided to u can maybe push 750 to it to test it out. Gives u some space to work with, then if u get another Dual4ohm Type-R u can wire them together to 1ohm and push each with 800rms, or set ur gains and push them with 500 each.

Of course all this is assuming the amp puts out at least its specs (which the Hifonics have been known to be a little overrated with, so expect around 500 @ 4, 1000 @ 2, and 1500 @ 1)

that is a dual 4 ohm woofer. it can only be wired to 8ohms or 2 ohms
Can someone confirm this? I believe you, But before I go spend money on an amp. etc

Also, I'm gonna research ohms a little more for the heck of it.

Doesn't it seem a pain in the *** to have 4 ohms written all over the flippin' box, but then only take 2/8 ohms? Oh well...

if it were a single 4ohm woofer it would operate at 4ohms always. but since it is a dual 4ohm woofer and no one shape or form are you going to get a 4 ohm load out of it when the two coils are wired together.
