Ohhhhhhh!

Just when i think i'm figuring this stuff out, i'm struck with yet another dilemma.

Pertaining to port tuning frequencies, there seems to be 2 current trains of though, both of which i can site in different threads on this same forum, and i need helping figuring out which one is correct.

Group A follows the conventional idea that the box experiences a sharp gain in ouput @ the tuning frequency, due to it being the resonant frequency of the box, and there's a steep rolloff below that frequency, and a more shallow rolloff back to the realm of sealed output above that frequency.

Group B, which i have just recently stumbled across, insists that the peak output frequencies are a certain range ABOVE tuning frequency. One post, for example, said for rock music, tune the box to 35hz, so that peak output would be in the 40's, where a box tuned to the 40's would have peak output in the 50hz range.

Unfortunately, i stumbled across group B a little late, and didn't have a chance to verify whether it was true or not. I went with an unconventionally high 42hz tune for my 15" L7's, not to stir up controversy, or to win SPL contests, but because in most recordings, that is, or is just below, where the actual driving beat of the song lies, right around 45-50hz, and rarely listening to rap, and mostly listening to rock music, with OCCASIONAL rap, i decided that accentuating the mid-to-high 40's range, but with a -3db rolloff still low enough to hit some low bass was the perfect box for me, but if it's true that my box is TRULY accentuating 50-60hz freq's, then i def. screwed up BIG TIME. My midbass drivers hit with pretty decent authority to 80hz, and even below to 70 with only a 12db/octave x-over on them. I screwed up big time if i'm only handling a 25hz range with authority with $600 worth of subwoofer. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

AND to add insult to injury, i'm finding out now (on other forums, not this one) that L7 15's specifically, are known to **** at higher frequencies (such as the one's i'm trying to make stand out)

So if i need to rebuild my box, so be it, but dammit i'm gonna swallow my pride and ask for some help.

WHERE, OH WHERE should i tune my L7's if i want to accentuate the actual BUMP of the beat, my midbass is excellent now, i have the actual sound of the bassdrum down perfect, i just want that kick to accompany it.

My retardedly high tuning, i think, was mainly a reaction to the super low tuning i had on my type-x's, and how disappointed i was with the actual output of the speakers at a tuning frequency that low. All the reading i did said that L7's like higher tuning than most speakers, and i remember my old L7 hitting high notes, balls to the wall. But now i'm finding out the 15's, in particular **** at high frequencies like i want.

So should i retune my 15's? Get 12's instead? Or keep it like it is?

It sounds fine as is, but i want to make sure i'm not wasting my **** time having two huge, expensive speakers in my car, and not be taking full use of them, or if the 12's would be louder for what i'm looking for.

Stressed, panicked, CONFUSED.

Please help, ahhhhhh!

The box will peak ABOVE tuning frequency, generally 5-7hz (in general). That does not mean that the sub or your vehicle will though //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Yikes.

I mean, the sub sounds great.

I just don't like the thought of not getting it's potential out of it.

And it's not like i built a tiny box, and tried to tune high to compensate for output, the box is roughly 11 cubes total, 9 cubes net for the two speakers. I just knew l7 10's and 12's loved tuning in the low 40's, and didn't realize the 15's were so much different.

What do people think i should do?

Leave it alone?

Change the tuning?

Get 12's instead?

Quit *****ing and get a new alternator?
