The number of miles is less of a concern than the maintenance done to it. You should be able to tell if it was taken care of or not. Check the oil level, but pay attention to the color of the oil. He's a racer, but he may or may not take good care of it.
That brake/clutch pedal trick may or may not work. My '96 Bronco has 235K miles, looks great, and has no real pedal wear. From the ad, it could well be a 70K car.
Some things to look for are the torque boxes (where the rear lower control arms meet to the frame). Heavy use of the pedal can distort them and then you have problems. Also, watch for rust in the rear quarters and hatch (or a bad repair job on those areas).
