Noob at subs needing some help

Hello everybody, i know a little about subs but not too much about specific brands. Basically i know the basics of how they work and how to wire them, so i was just wondering if someone could help me out a little bit.

One of my buddies told me the then sundown SA-10's or 12's are good subs, so i was just wondering a few things. Are these good subs? I am looking for a mix of sound quality and loudness but loudness is key but i don't want them to sound like crap, ya know? Anyways, I have nothing, no radio no amp no subs yet but like i said my friends say these are good and i was just wondering if thats true. If they are whats a good amp to buy for em?

To give a little more information, my car is a 1996 dodge intrepid, for those of you that don't know its a sort of large car for being a sedan if that makes a difference, thanks ahead of time! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Yes, sundown makes excellent products. If you are not going to be using an amp and getting new speakers, you will only need/want one sub. More than one will be unnecessary and will drown out your speakers. I have one Alpine Type-R 12" (I love it to death) being powered with 500 watts and it POUNDS. and I also have aftermarket speakers being run with an amp and the single sub keeps up fine on 90% of songs to my liking.

For a car stereo set up with a sub, here is what you will need:

- Head unit that has 3 sets of RCA outputs (sometimes referred to as 6 preouts)

- 500-600 watt RMS amp for one SA-10 or SA-12

- 4 gauge amp wiring kit (that way you wont need to run new wire if you do any upgrading in the future)

- SA-10 or SA-12 (DVC 4-ohm)

- Ported enclosure (if you want loud); custom ported enclosure if you want to maximize your equipment (trust me, it makes the sub better in every way possible)

Since you are so new to car audio, I would recommend having someone install everything for you. If you want to do it yourself, make sure you understand how to wire everything, can take apart the interior of your car, know how to make a GOOD ground connection, have lots of time, and have lots of patience. You dont need to worry about it not sounding good if you get a SA sub AND a gooood box. Box is as important (if not more) than the sub.

I wouldn't throw less then a 1000 real watts at a sa seems like that's when they really shine

i'll look into obsidan audio, any advice on specific subs to look at from them? i really don't know much about this stuff but am trying to learn.
Go to there website your gunna see just one model diff sizes //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif if your looking to get loud that's a perfect sub for ya

Don't buy a type R lmao!!! Be different And actually get loud
.... what's wrong with type-R? You can find them super cheap. And they are great for the price. They get plenty loud too. Cant imagine what mine would do on 750w+

0.0 .... that's a lot for a sub rated for 600. But then again, it is Sundown I suppose.
A sa will take 1,500 clean trust me 1000 is gunna hold up awhile

So i did a very little bit of research and as it turns out, the Obsidian are like 60 bucks cheaper, this is good for me because I'm on a budget but is it going to give me drastically worse results than the sundown? Also i looked into this whole thing a bit and i could find a lot of stuff online about sundown vs obsidian vs scar and that was it, where do kickers fit into this argument? My friend tells me they are just the brand that arn't very good but are really "mainstream" is this true? Sorry about all of the questions guys...

Anyways unless the obsidian are drastically worse than the sundown i think i might go for them, so what kind of amp should i get for 2 12" obsidian d2s? (I dunno if the D2 means anything but thats what their website calls em :p)

No obsidan will be about the same and all depends on your budget and d2 is dual voice cool of your looking at two go d4 so u can wire them at 1 ohm cheaper amps... And u could run d2s at 2 or .5 but guessing u have stock electric so two d4s on a 1500 rms at 1 ohm amp in a good box you'll be flexin windows !

Sorry i missed this post originally, but for the box if there somewhere i can find the specs i need to make a box? Like size and everything? Because I know different sizes affects the sound and stuff so is there somewhere i can go to look for all of this?

And thanks for the help with the stereo i will find one with those outputs, also my dad will be helping me install them and he has done some before so i think we should be set, thanks //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Never worry about asking too many questions; that's what a forum is for. If we didnt want to help you, we wouldnt be here.

Obsidian will perform just fine for you.

Your friend is right about kicker. They are a mainstream brand. Yes, they sell some stuff at wal-mart for $50-100. But they also sell some $480 subs.

D2 means that it is Dual Voice Coil (DVC) and each voice coil is 2ohms. You need to match the number of ohms to how much power your amp will put out at that resistance (ohms are a measure of resistance in a flow of power). DVC 2-ohm subs are generally used in applications where you will be running two subs, because they can be wired in such a way that the amp sees a 2 ohm load (where most amps put out the most power). You should look for a DVC-4ohm sub. A single DVC-4ohm sub can be wired in such a way that the amp will see 2 ohms.

I never said anything that suggested he should get anything but the SA. All I said was I love my Type-R on 500w. It would not blow up at 750+ ... It's rated for 1000w

A sa will take 1,500 clean trust me 1000 is gunna hold up awhile
Why dont they rate it for 1000w then?
