Next step to upgrade??

My girlfriend is wanting to upgrade her subs a bit and I really wasn't sure what the best next step would be. she currently has two type r 1222's, the 500 watt rms ones, each being run off a kenwood kac-7204, bridged at 4ohm for 500 watts rms, 0 gauge, kinetik 600, in an '08 altima 3.5 with the bose stereo. The subs are in a sealed enclosure with about 1.2 cubes each.

I will be building a new ported box first of all,

but then what would you guys suggest as a next step to get extra colume and bass out of it?

New subs? New amp?

Looking to stay under $500. I was thinkin possibly adding a third type r 12 and a better amp to give all three about 500 or 600 watts rms.

If I were you, I'd definitely up the power. Type Rs can take quite a bit over what they're rated at, as long as you keep the signal clean. A third sub woud definitely provide more output, but even a correctly built ported box is capable of giving you an output improvement that you wouldn't believe.

Ported with more power was pretty much what I was assuming would see the best gains.

Any amp suggestions? Would have to be stable at 2ohm and somewhere around 1200 to 1500 rms?

probably around 350 to 400 if we are keeping the same subs, 500 total for budget, just have to buy wood and carpet and such.

U can find a Kicker zx1500 for like 300 shipped usually
I was just looking at one of those, 750 rms wouldn't be too much for these type r's? I know they're pretty tough subs so I guess I wouldn't feel too worried about putting that kind of power to them.

They'll be fine as long as u don't clip em to death.
for sure, unfortunately when I did the original install she didn't want to change the deck out, so I have the amps hooked up through speaker level inputs. I do have a LOC that I could solder up and hope that's a clean enough signal. The stock stereo has a 6 cd changer and a stock and and ***** so i don't think i'll be changing that out any time soon.

If you can still find these new, look for the Alpine MRP-M2000 in addition to putting those Type Rs in a ported enclosure. She will stop thinking about upgrading subs after those upgrades.

Memphis or American Bass amps are well worth the money and can put out the consistant RMS power you need for those subs. But for sure, ported box all the way especially for more bass. To be honest, try doing the box change before anything and see if that alone would change your opinion and save the $ for something else!
