Share a few of my thoughts, as I've been looking as well...
The new Onkyo line-up has been pretty impressive thus far, looked at them and seem to have a lot of great features for the price.
Also had my eyes on the Sony_ES Lineup as far as receivers are concerned. The have a solid warranty (5years), and have great features, and an easy to navigate onscreen GUI. New models have recently come out, which is leading to great deals on just past models.
I've also browsed the Denon, Yamaha, and Rotel selections. Through reading and talking, the Rotel would be the best choice for the best sound... and not all the frills of the other units. Great build and quality, and really clean sound for 5.1
The Yamaha's have always been well built, and the new models coming out are on par with most of the industries offerings. And you know you'll get a good product.
Denon, you will pay a little more compared to the others. But, you still get a good product, and an even better on screen GUI compared to the Sony.
I've listened and demo'd quite a few speakers. And if you're going for 5.1, and the $2k includes speakers, subwoofer, and receiver... it's going to be quite tough.
Most B&W dealers are clearing out old stock in favor of new, check out some offerings in the 600series and such.
If you're interested in getting a great set of mains for now, the the 68X series sounds great. Maybe look into the 685 Theatre selection. You should be able to find a local dealer to actually listen, and hear for yourself.
Another choice, if you want to satisfy it all with your current budget is SVSound. (
http://www.svsound.com) They have some MTM's they're clearing out, at great prices. I'm very eager to hear them in person, I doubt they'll be a disappointment. They have 5.0 setups for ~$800... and you can add a subwoofer for a package discount. Then with a receiver, wiring, odds and ends, you'll be near your budget and be statisfied.
Just some things I've gathered over reading, listening, and looking... over the past two months or so.
