New to car audio

I am looking to put a system in my car. I finally have a car in decent enough shape that I can justify doing so and I got some money saved up.

Im broke as a joke so I'll probably buy my set up off Craigslist or eBay.

Can anyone give me some pointers on what to look for when I look at a system. I know up front I will not buy anything without listening to it hooked up.

Ideally, I'm looking for a couple smaller subs or one nice one and I'm considering getting some tweeters too.

I have never hooked up car audio before, but I am alright with general electronics.

I guess I'd just like some pointers on what to look for while shopping, what to be careful about when I'm hooking it up, and what are some of the best brands/products. Thanks

If you are broke this hobby isn't for you plane and simple... Save your money and do one thing at a time, I'd start with a good head unit...

start with a new deck and frt stage ,then add as needed and wanted .look on the site here you may find what you want or need from one of the vendors ,like myself, or one of the other members new or used

7 post later still got no help geez guys. be easy on the new guy.

Here's what i would recommend if you are very very very broke

head unit $35

this does not have a cd player, it will accept aux for your phone or ipod but it does play sd card up to 16gb

Dual - 50W x 4 In-Dash Deck with MP3 Playback - XR4115

for cheap but kinda reliable apsm 1500.1d

Audiopipe APSM-1500 1500 Watt Mono Mini Amplifier : APSM1500 : VMInnovations.com

For cheap sub

64.99 3 inch voice coil rms 700watts

I bought one of these and its promising, you just need to break it in about 2 days play time

NEW STEREO 12" DUAL VOICE 4 Ohm 12" 1400W CAR AUDIO SUB SUBWOOFER 1400 WATT M2 | eBay

mids and highs leave it for the next upgrade, you will see a difference from changing your factory hu

this is very very very budget but will bang pretty good

the guy wants bass and you are not helping

Come on man.... No walmart brand junk... Check the Classifieds out... this is a big problem with getting into this hobby, you buy some really really cheap stuff it sounds like crap you get mad, then talk trash etc... Save UP 400-600$ that is a good starting range for a Starter system.. Get a GOOD HU.. GET some GOOD Frontstage going on.. Get a good amp for your front stage.. When YOU have that done, then start worrying about the other stuff.

actually he said system not just bass , and you telling him to buy junk IS really not helping ! i understand he's on a limited budget which he has not said how much , but he would be better starting at the deck and front stage then adding a sub and mono block amp later .why would you even tell someone to buy woofers that you know arent even good . he'd be better buying kicker cvr's instead of those .myself on the other hand ,am trying to steer him in the right direction to getting a system that he will be happy with and not have to worry about going up in smoke.
