New To Car Audio, Need Help

I just bought 2 Sony XPlod 6.5'' speakers for my rear deck on my 1991 Mazda 626 LX.

My HU is a JVC cd player...

I got home, replaced my stock speakers with the new sony speakers, and i have a problem.

I'm running them off the HU. When I turn the balance all the way left, the back left speaker sounds awesome, and it's very bass-y. Then if i turn it all the way right it's the same story. But when i put the balance equally in the middle, they both sound like shit and i barely get any bass at all.

Is this problem as easy to fix as buying an amp? If that's the case, i'm ok with that, because i had planned on getting a sub anyway. And if that is the case, could you help me out with amp/sub selection.

I listen to rap, and i just want to hear some bass, i'm not looking to spend thousands of dollars. I just want to have a good feel for the bass, and still understand what's being said in the songs...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i'd just buy a 12inch sub put it in the truck with an amp and it'll be enough bass. What do you mean that they sound like shit, like distortion? or just no bass, there may be bass but you might not be able to hear it because of all the other speakers perhaps? im not sure amping them would help but im not familiar with sony stuff so i couldn't really tell ya what to get, but a sub and amp would be the best bet for bass, try http://www.Ikesound.com they sell stuff pretty cheap

I'm not interested in staying with sony. Like i'm not a loyal fan or anything, the two speakers i just happened to buy were sonys.

as for sounding like shit, i don't know. I just don't understand how they sound good when only one at a time is on, and there's a lot of bass, but then if i put the balance between both of them, they lose absolutely all bass....

i just had my wires crossed on my back left speaker because they weren't labeled.
