New Preamplifier?

Pure preamps are simple in design but the markups are huge with pretty knobs, switches

and case.

I would focus on speaker replacement and get higher powered amplification depending

on the speaker sensitivity, etc. Perhaps even biamp as a minimum. I think the

speakers are your weakest link, then amplifier, the rest is fine and does the job well.

Since you have access to proaudio amps, you might want to do a test. See if you can

score a PLX for testing and bridge the amp and drive one B&W cabinet to compare how

the speaker is being driven vs. the Rotel amp. You want to rule out the amplifier as a

variable meaning you want to ensure the speakers are not be starved for power.

A bridged PLX will probably have 3x to 4x more clipping headroom than the Rotel which

should open up the sound a bit.

For now ignore amp anolomies like hiss, etc as you can deal with this later, you just

want to test on variable right now. But if you did migrate to a PLX caliber amp for

home use, a Parasound Halo is nice because it has balanced outputs with 8 volt signals

that would mate excellent to proamps vs. the 1v preouts found on Rotel gear. You can

reduce proamp gain which in turn reduces induced hiss when you have a higher output

preamp signal.

Since you are in the pro audio field, I still wonder why you are messing with ordinary

home audio gear when there is better for less money. Use PLX3402's are cheap now,

$500 - $700 each, two for mains, each in bridged mode is pretty sick and very clean sounding,

If for some reason, the speakers sound better with that test, then keep the speakers

and do the higher power amp upgrade. If you think the speakers are not offereing anything

more to the party, then the speakers need replacement.

You can always enter DIY speakers but that is a dfferent can of worms to deal with.

It will take time and money and experimentation to find your sound.

I was wondering how long it would be before you showed up... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

I actually have done several amp swaps and like the Rotel the best vs. H||H V800, QSC Mx-1500a, QSC Series III 3500... On my old DM330i the H||H V800 sounded the best.

That 3500 did sound sexy on the 703s btw...

I don't really have the time/money to do all the experimenting that I would want to be happy with DIY speakers. However, I would like to do this one day, maybe after college. I play with plans and ideas in my free time but don't have the resources to commit at the moment...

As for different speakers... I have milled this idea around for a bit and done some listening. I have checked out countless other brands but like the B&W sound. A few others have suggested upgrading to 804S, but I don't particularly like the sound of the 804S. It's to soft and flabby. I do like the 803S... But, at $5500 I can't justify that cost at the moment, because I don't like them that much more than my 703. Now the 803D, //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/yumyum.gif.0556df42231b304b9c995aefd13928a8.gif, But at $8000 that would be much...

I'm always listening and always looking. So, it's not like I am totally hooked on B&W (I just really like them because of my experience owning them). I've listened to some Sonus Faber Loudspeakers that I jsut love but they are up there in the 803D price range...

I might just keep with what I have. Who knows...

Take a look at a brand new Juicy Music Audio Peach it has an HT bypass and can be used in conjunction with your Rotel. The quality and construction of the Peach is top notch. It is a tube pre and the should have killer sound quality to it, the folks on the Klipsch forum swear by them and it's bigger brother the Blueberry but it is more geared for vinyl afficianados.
