So the Powerbass amps now have x's at the end - like asa1500.1Dx

Differences listed:

old one - 1/0 ga terminal and no fan cooling

new one - 4 ga terminal, angled terminals, and fan cooled

From the placement of all hardware, the board seems the same.

Can anyone tell if this is a worthwhile upgrade or just a facelift?

Is the addition of a fan, or the changing of terminal size a deal-breaker?

Thanks,

Chris

We're talking about the difference between serieses... not personal opinions. I appreciate the testimony, but it's not what I'm asking.

Bane,

Drilling out the terminal would work, but probably isn't needed, as long as your 4 ga is short enough. 150 amps of current is a comfortable max for good quality 4 ga.

No need to drill them out and **** your warranty, Just use the 1/0 and get 4g reducers, That short of an area is not going to make much of a power difference anyway.

Focal Plate Amp Series and Powerbass ASA Series use the same heatsink they look almost identical.

Those ASA amplifers needed a cooling fan those higher power ASA amps ran really hot at their lowest rated ohm stability.

Go for the new look imo.

Only way I'd run 4 gauge for that is if I ran 0 gauge and then used a distribution block. The addition of the fan is nice, though. If the boards are the same, shouldn't be a huge diff between them. One might use slightly different components.

Thanks for the input guys. If I go for the Reference series from Powerbass, the new line has enough improvements to be worth it. Still waiting on some university reimbursement before I buy though.

Feeding the beast should be simple. 0/1 ga or 2 runs of 4 ga, into a dist. block at the amp... with a 4ga output and stubby wire. Minimize the flow restriction and voltage drop.

Actually there isn't much choice in the matter. The old series are practically gone.

Millionbuy just updated to the "X" series, and upped the price from $220 to $280

I hope the upgrade is worth it...

I asked my local shop owner where I get my PB stuff and he said its the same amp other than the "face lift".

I don't like the new terminals though and I run two of them at .5 ohm daily and .25 ohms for comps and haven't had one shut down from heat yet as far as not having a fan. So I prefer the old style.

I have used those reducers before and if you don't have them really really tight they are easy to move around and arc on each other.
