Argee no.
If they said that to you at Circuit City dont listen to them.

I used to work there and theyd make us say anything to sell a product.

The MTXs are NOT better than the W7, but the W7 is overall superior to the 9500. When we are talking objective measures "everyone has their preference" doesn't really figure into it...

I havent posted much, but figured start it off the right way. First things first, just so everyone can see the 10" comparisson, here---

I have yet to see a comparison of the 12"s, so no comment. I did work at Circuit City for about a year, and no, they do not sell the 9500 series woofer, nor can they order it (last time I checked). As with what I have gathered from all comments said, there can be no conclusion drawn from what anyone has said because it all comes from a personal preference. Yes JL is expensive, and yes they have a good rep for subs, maybe or maybe not the best. Yet to be proven with any hard proof. MTX is cheaper, and has come a long way from its beginnings, especially to be even considered to compete with JL.

If anyone has a site that may not be biased, please post so I can debate for myself and not on what others say. I am in the process of buying new subs and amp, liked the mtx's, also the JL's. Have the money for both, but cant decide. I want a sub for anytime use, not just pound my eardrums to hell. Thanks for all the comments though, will take into consideration.

Ive heard a setup with 2 MTX9500 10" Sledgehammers and yes! They are better subs. Those 2 10's took about 900 watts RMS a piece from a HiFonics Brutus amp. And hit harder than any other setup id heard from any company ever. It hit more like 15's or maybe even 18's and sounded crisp and clear, not boomy and slow like JL's w7's tend to be. Those are some very, vsery tough subs!! They take alot of power and have a 15-20 hour break in period. JL's are highly highly over rated by people who havnt expanded their brand name vocabulary. Talk to anyone who knows about competition, JL's are talked up way to much.

Your shittin' me right. If JL is talked up way to much why are they one of the top sellers in Amplifiers and Subs? They arn't talked up it's because there bass is purely amazing. But you can't base everything off of opinions. Hard facts is what it comes down too. Yes those 9500 hit harder then any of the W7's but if you listen to the guys at JL talk they were mainly going for such a clear sounding bass at high wattage they decided to not let them "hit" as hard. But those 9500's pound like crazy. They would destroy a lot of different brands in many ways. But overall MTX will hit louder and harder but not as clear and as nice as a JL. Not saying those JL's don't pound because they do!

That comparison is totally meaningless. It really proves nothing. 10% difference in Xmax (in this case, 2.5mm) isn't noticeable. Higher power handling doesn't make it a better woofer in any way. And the rest of it is just comparing the difference in overall design and materials used....which, again, don't mean anything other than they are two different subs.

Also, the reason why they chose to only compare the 10's is because JL scales their specs and MTX doesn't. For example, yes, the MTX 10 has 2.5mm more Xmax than the 10w7, but the 13w7 has an Xmax of 32mm whereas the 15" MTX has the same Xmax as the 10" (which is 25.5). So, the 13w7 has 7mm more excursion than the 15" MTX.
