New amp or lower wattage sub. Opinions needed.

Here's the scoop: I'm trying to decide on a sub for my car. (4 door sedan). I mainly listen to Rock and Roll and blues. I like tight punchy bass...and I want to feel it too. My current sub amp is a Profile msx 600 (rms is 300 watts @ 4 ohms, 410 watts @ 2 ohms). I'm running a crappy bazooka right now on it.

I've heard from people that a single speaker will do it for me (12"). My own experience with trying out a pair of 10" Xtants in a sealed enclosure made me think that 2 10's is the way to go. I could feel the thump from these. However, if I want 2 speakers....unless I go with a lower watter pair of speakers....I may need a new amp.

So...question is....what to do. I'm searching pawn shops now for subs in case I run into a good deal. But...I'm definitely up for buying new if I cant find anything.

Will an upgraded amp (something with 800w rms) give me alot more options? I JUST got my Profile by the way....

Recommendations?

I think that you should keep your profile and try a Pioneer 306dvc sub and if you want more bass than that upgrade amp and get another 306dvc... but i think that one 12' will be enough for your taste and that sub can get very loud...

what kind of box are you using... sealed or ported?

the 306's sound very good sealed but ported they're beasts

x2!!

I dont have a box yet. I'm definitely looking at sealed as that supposedly gives me the punch that I'm looking for.

So out of curiosity why the pioneer...as opposed to JL audio or Alpine type S or something else?

go with one kicker S12L7. I have gotten 2 in my trunk sealed and i love them. I also have a friend running one its still sounds great. And a 800rms amp would be perfect for one. but thats just my 2 cents.

In looking these over...I see that they are about a 400 watt rms sub. So...that means that for sure I'd only be able to do 1....not 2.

Dumb question: 12 vs 10. Do you get more punch out of a 12 than a 10 for rock? Or just deeper bass? (Sealed enclosure remember...)

If you get single voice coil subs you can run them in parallel and have a 2ohm load at the amp you have, and it should sound pretty good. I just took out my Solobaric 8's in a small sealed box that I was running that way, and they pounded on 200w Rms. You should get 1 dual voice coil 12, or 2 single voice coil 10's, and run them parallel like you would a dual voice coil sub. I personally have had great luck with single subwoofers, and just don't see the need for 2 subs in a daily driver/SQ type install, unless you like going deaf or are already- My car hits in the mid 130's with music on 300w, distortion free.

i dunno about the JL but the 306 will sound better and louder than the type S sealed and that's for sure.
