im going up to school in a few days and want to buy some type of a surround sound system to go along with the plasma that i recieved as a gift. i do not no much anything about home audio besides that bose is like the JL (known to be the best and price like it was) i have all JL in my truck so sound is important to me but for now i want to get something nice for arround 350.00 to 400.00 but will spend 500.00 to get something worth it. please let me know what is good. i am talking about the complete in a box style system

thanks

Nick

Bose is hardly "the best". I wouldn't even put it on a Top 10 list of best manufacturers. Bose is more like Audiobahn - excellent marketing, flashy products, poor technical specs.

If you have a nice TV, why waste the experience with a HTIB (home-theater-in-a-box)? Do it right - for $500, you could put together a very good seperates system that will blow away the HTIB junk.

ok well i guess it is good that ask for some help them because i had know idea. im open to putting together my own set up. but i need some help or some sites to read about what to look for.

Agreed...Steve's (ss3079) tower project ended up being around $400, IIRC..and those things will kick the living shit out of any HTIB.

Add a decent 5.1 receiver for system upgradability (sp) and you're set. A DIY subwoofer will probably run you around $150-$200 depending on how much power you want, and the satellite speakers are easy to build.

$404.02 for all 10 speakers, crossover parts, ports, and binding posts.

Toss in a sheet of MDF and some paint and you're under $500.

I learned the hard way - go DIY from the start ... save you money in the end. Plus you can stand back, listen and look at them, and say shit ... I built those.
