it might... underpowering speakers can cause harmful levels of distortion (which causes voltage spikes, which kills voice coils) when you drive the amp hard. And since these are subs, I seriously doubt your going to not want them to bump.

When my volume is low, I'm underpowering my speakers.

yup thats correct. But underpowering them alone does not kill the speakers. its the voltage spikes from the amplifiers peaking that does. So if you cant hear the subs because the amp isnt powerful enough, then you turn it up and send the amp clipping away.. that is what kills the speakers. so get a more powerfull amp that you dont have to turn up all the way to achieve the volume that you desire. then you are all kewl.

 
Well Vovlvobot, if you dont give the subs enough power, you might get a short and could potentiakky set the car in fire... My advice, give it double its rated power.
