Need some advice!!!

First, I used to be big into car audio back in the 90's, and have only been comparing factory sound systems since then! I had a 2010 Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon with the factory upgraded Infinity sound system with the 8" subwoofer. That was not a bad sounding set up for a factory upgrade. I traded that Jeep in for a 2015 Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon without the new Alpine factory upgraded sound system, and the stock speakers are the second worst things I have heard, with the first worst being a pair of Kraco speakers sitting on top of a rear deck! I now realize after paying a lot for the vehicle I need a decent sounding system put in. The Alpine upgrade would of been about $800.00 more and they didn't have that option in the color Jeep I wanted. Right now I am looking at (4) Kicker 40CS654 and either an Orion XTR1200.4, Orion XTR800.4 or a less expensive route PPI Black Ice BA1600.4. My question is based off the Kicker power specs which amp should I go with? Also will I need a capacitor? I am not going to use a subwoofer. Please help!

I can get the following amps for the following prices:

Orion XTR1200.4 - $289.00

Orion XTR800.4 - $234.00

PPI Black Ice BA1600.4 - $110

Any particular reason you want 4 speakers? Most here myself included will tell you that taking the money you would spend on the rears and putting that money into better front speakers is the best bet. Rear speakers make getting your stage right pretty hard, especially if you turn your head or move around. Why not use some compact subwoofer you can fit under the rear seat instead? You can keep your rear speakers in for rear sound when you have passengers- of course this depends on your head unit, or whether youre using the factory head unit (which can be bad as many OEM stereos modify output to mask the crappy OEM speakers).

I have a Pioneer TS-SWX2502 which is pretty good, though it wouldnt please most people here. Its better bass than any speaker is going to put out on its own though. There are other compact enclosure options which might suit you as well- a few by JL Audio which is a great sub brand.

Whats your budget for this project? Have you factored in the cost for the amp kit, and have you considered door prep yet (best way to get midbass/bass out of your door speakers)? Im not trying to force you towards a sub- just trying to encourage what most of us think will get you the best sound for your buck. A sub is the best way to get better sound out of your door speakers besides door prep, and of course it adds considerable bass to your overall sound.

If youre dead-set on no sub, at least consider a front speaker that is well known for midbass- HAT Imagines (expensive but amazing and can be mounted coaxially) or JBL P660Cs (component speakers- tweeter is separate) come to mind. The back should be whatever cheap speaker you want (or even the stockers) just to add some rear fill. Right now I really don't have room for a sub. I cannot put a sub under the rear seats because I need the rear seat fold down feature. I really don't have room in the trunk area because I have a 110 pound German Shepherd that likes to ride in the back. I can get 2 sets of Kicker 40cs654 for $110.00, the amps listed in my first post for the prices listed, then I will need the wire kit for around $75ish. I will put sound dampener and poly fill in the over head sound bar. That is my budget right now.

I do understand why you might choose not to run a sub- size constraints were the primary reason I went with the small sub I have now. After driving a Miata for 10 years I didnt want to give up my newfound extra space (the extended cab part- 2002 Ranger Ext Cab here) for a set of 10s. Im happy with my choice and wouldnt change what I did.

In the future you might consider some crafty mounting options. Maybe a set of solid 8s or even a single 8 mounted under a center console somewhere? Some people even manage to custom mount 8s in the doors. Just a few ideas- mounting locations are limited by your ride, your budget, and your imagination //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

I would suggest scrapping the kickers, at least in the front. Kicker makes decent amps but they live off their name now- I am not the only one who has this opinion. PPI used to be awesome, then their products became crap. However, now they are making some great amps again. The PPI Phantom P900.4 is all the rage here now.

I have heard some good things about the Black Ice series too, and amps are much less important to overall sound than your front stage. So heres my final suggestion that seems to me would fit your budget:

PPI Black Ice BA1600.4

JBL P660C front stage (there are other great component speakers, but none as good for the price ~$150)

Stockers or cheap coaxials for the rear. Pioneer TS-D1602R ($75 online)? Polk DB651 (~$100 online)?

Just my suggestion. Perhaps others will offer their advice. I cannot stress enough- Front speakers will make the biggest difference in your system, and especially in your case since you wont be able to have a sub. The JBLs are known for great midbass. Other options like the HAT Imagines I mentioned are approaching $300, so I omit them as a final suggestion. Good luck..

EDIT: Or even use 1 pair of those Kickers in the back, and jump up to the JBLs up front. Spend the extra money you were willing to throw at an Orion amp on the front stage, and roll with the PPI Black Ice. Just IMO...

Good info! I checked out the jbl's and they look good! I'll take that advice and scrap the kickers. Should I look into the jbl amps too? If so which one would be better with the JBL P660C, GTO 804EZ or GTO 504EZ? Also I was thinking the JBL P662s coaxial in the rear over head sound bar.

Nah the amps you have are fine. Pick one and be happy. If you want to change amps, you might consider the PPI p900.4 phantom. I have the Polk Audio PA-D4000.4 which is very similar and its great. It is Class D instead of Class AB, and some people dont like class d amps on the mids.

in terms of the speakers, remember that you will have to mount the tweeters someplace (door panel? a-pillars?). A little extra work, but its worth it. In terms of the rears, I would say any of your choices are fine. Rear speakers dont matter much.

Well I pulled the trigger based off your recommendation. I went with the JBL P660c in the fronts (factory already has a spot to mount the tweeters on the top of the dash), JBL P662s for the sound bar and the JBL GTO804EZ amp. Thanks again!

Those JBL P660c's will blow your mind on an amp. Make sure to set your gains! Also, dont judge right off the bat- they need at least a few hours to loosen up. Most speakers sound like shite until broken in.

Youre going to love that setup. Now start thinking for the future where you might stuff a few 8's //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
