So I'm buying some 6.5" components for my corolla, and I can't decide whether to go for Alpine type-R or Rockford Fosgate Punch series.

I know that the general consensus is that the Alpines sound better, but I am on a budget, and I can get the RFs for $60 less. The question is, are the Alpines worth the extra dough?

Secondly, if I were to go with Alpine, should I go for the new model, SPR-60S, or the old one, SPR-17S? Are there any significant differences?

for the price difference, I say the rockford punch.

I've had the punch and they are very good for the price. the tweeters will get ridiculously loud off little power and the mids dont distort very easily.

Friend of mine has alpine type r coaxials in his trunk and theyre ok considering theyre not an amp.

Id suggest an amp either way. but, u cant go wrong either way. Go with whats cheaper

Thanks for the inputs. I didn't mention that I'm probably not getting an amp; I'm going to power them with a 20 watt RMS JVC headunit.

Any other suggestions for good components off headunit power? I heard lower RMS rating and higher sensitivity are usually better for this?

The thing is, I'm not looking to blast music that loud... I just want speakers for SQ and more treble clarity to balance my subs. I want component because my car already has a spot for tweeters. Plus, I'm still open to getting an amp in the future if I do decide I want some more oomf. I just don't want to spend that much money and time at the moment.

True or false: at moderate volumes, both speakers I listed will sound crisp with or w/o an amp?

you will hear the tweeter very well, but your mids will go lacking a little, but, I dont think itll be too bad. I say go for either one if youre going to amp later.
