need help with sub selection (pics included)

I am currently running the older style 10" RF punch hx2's

with a memphis 16-MC1000D amp

the subs are 2 ohm DVC and mounted in a sealed box. I drive a single cab ranger so I tried to build the box to give me some air space but I still needed some leg room. it's gotten the point where I've taken my subs out to go wheelin and I don't wanna put em back in, I don't wanna lose the leg room.

I've got this alpine head unit

and it seems the amp is still havin trouble pushing the subs, I dunno it's like I've got the gain cranked and the bass on +3 and it still won't get loud enough to distort the subs. I think it's just the headunit cause it seems after volume 25 it doesn't get any louder (it goes to 35).

anyways I need some shallow 10's or even 8's that will work well with that amp and head unit so I can stuff em behind my seats and still have leg room. thanks for any info you've got for me.

nothin? I was lookin around and saw RF now has a shallow mount series, like 3.5" mounting depth. lets discuss 2 tens with less than the recomended air space vs. 1 ten with optimal air space vs. 2 8's with optimal air space. sealed enclosure.

Hmm , those subs which I love and still own several pairs of, can get loud. I would say your enclosure is the culprit of lack of volume. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

yeah, most likely. I hit 130 at a comp (just wanted to get metered, dunno what mic it was). I guess that's not too bad in a ranger. I'm gettin rid of these puppies and want to replace them with something more shallow. sooooo should I get 2 shallow tens, 1 shallow ten, or 2 eights? if anyone's been in a ranger they know there's not much room back there

If you want more output , I would look into a single sub setup, that might allow you to port it. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

do you know what you have to work with for mounting depth and such. Recently I have been looking into Treo SSi subs 10 is about 5-3/16" mounting depth and appears to be a pretty good sub recommended 0.8 ft^3 sealed. Or maybe Phoenix Gold RSD10d was looking at those too 4-7/8" mounting depth and recommended 0.3 to 0.5 ft^3 sealed. Not really sure if either of these subs get loud compared to what else is out there though.

Oh and nice ranger ya got there, I actually thought it was a yota at first //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif not too often to see the compact fords out there wheeling it up.

Edit: can always look into the Kicker CVT's as well but from the specs they need more airspace, but will give you the legroom you want, or check out the Pioneers shallow mounts.

thanks for the compliments on the rig, been wheelin for ~2 years now. it's fun and building it keeps me busy.

back on topic: I haven't measured lately but i think my subs now are ~6.5" mounting depth. I'd like em to be as shallow as possibe and at 3.5" the shallow p3's are looking pretty attractive. I plan on getting the shallowest subs possible that are decenly loud (I was happy with my 130db) and mount em in the shallowest box possibe. my back wall is 36" wide and I believe about 18" tall so that'll give you an idea of what airspace I'd be working with. there's gotta be a void for my amp too so maybe 2 separate boxes?

I don't have first hand experience with how different air spaces affect sound so I've been going with the theory that there is no replacement for displacement (2 10" > 2 8" > 1 10"). but if I could get more output with 1 10" and optimal air space (sealed) it sure would be cheaper to go that route.

Not trying to rain on your parade, but going with a shallower pair of 10's in the same sealed enclosure, with the same amount of power isn't going to increase your output any. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

my friend has a ranger ext cab though but just trying to get an idea on interior space. I don't think there really is much room between the seats (also not sure if you have a bench or buckets) But if you have buckets or get buckets you could maybe mount a pretty beefy single sub inverted and have its butt stick out towards the windshield. Probably your best bet of gaining output with that you currently have.

One thing I have been considering for my own build is maybe going with a fiberglass or composite fiberglass/mdf box where at the least cutting out an area of the MDF and sealing it with fiberglass to get the extra 3/4" or 1/2" of mounting depth. In the manual for the kicker CVT's they show a process for cutting out the mdf behind the sub and using a supplied metal plate to seal it off.
