Need Help With New Speakers For My Car

I've decided to start with this. Sony MEX-XB100BT CD receiver at Crutchfield.com
What should I focus on next? Those component speakers or subs?
a sub would be next. then door deadening then get some raw drivers along with an active capable amp and do a 3 way front stage(we'll talk about that later). leave the rears alone.

Thanks for these links. I'll look into them. How does the built in amp stack up against other amps out on the market?

its pretty decent on the power output.

Should I be looking at a single 10 or 12 inch sub? Would a sub be compatible with this HU?

I looked a little into sound deadening, I see some people say using Home Depot's "QuickRoof" stuff works, but others say it's not as great.

I recommend kicker 6.5 ' coaxial door speakers (model: 40CS654) for $70 they are great at mids and highs (I recommend a LPF "LowPassFilter" as they aren't the best for bass). For 6x9 speakers you can find great deals for $130 budget. I got the Pioneer 2-Way 6x9 Speakers (model: TS-D6902R). They were the last years model and I got them new for a great deal around $80 or $90 if I remember correctly. I'm sure you can find the new model for them within your budget. I used to have these two speakers sets hooked up only to an upgraded aftermarket radio, (Pioneer FH-X720BT). Great radio for $140 and has options for LPF for front speakers and "sub" settings for rear speakers and/or subwoofers. My car slammed with the two 6x9s in the rear, everyone said they sounded like a small sub (which is good for 6x9s). All in all these are my recommendations and they were amazingly crisp and clear at all volumes and frequencies for me. However your preference may be different. Always go to your local audio store, best buy, ect.. And listen to the speakers available to get an idea of how they sound, even if you do not want to purchase them there. I feel this set up is a good starter for excelent high and mid and decent bass for 6x9, but do not expect license plate rattling bass. 6x9 are nowhere near what subs can do with the right amp.

Your sub will depend on your music library and what you want out of it and loudness expectations. Do you want flexing windshields, ear f**king, chest pounding, throat choking tapout bass? Do you want super deep low frequency hitting bass thats like a wind tunnel? Do you just want a nice solid smooth hit for sound quality purposes?

stay clear away from that peel and seal quick roof junk. 3 layers will equal to a single layer of proper deadener so money wise you are actually getting ripped off for the performance you get. Also the smell and stickiness along with poor quality control makes it an extremely unreliable deadener.. Go with stinger expert roadkill if you are on a budget.

So before you get too far ahead, here are some thoughts. It is a nice deck and did do its rated power, but I'd still opt for a lower priced deck that has 3 sets of 4V pre-outs and a separate amp. I know you want to deaden the doors and do everything right, but don't forget the big picture. At 40w per speaker, you'll hardly see any midbass, which is what deadening the doors usually improves. I'd consider that deck if you got 2 ohm speakers, which will give you some added output from that deck and some more midbass. Before you deaden the roof, make sure your setup even calls for it. I think anything under 2kW, you can probably leave the roof alone. Which does bring us to the question...how loud do you want it?

Btw as far as 2 ohm speakers go, JBL and CDT have some, not sure about others. I'd still opt for separate amp/deck. I also do NOT recommend coaxials for the front.

I want some nice bass, I want people to hear it thump when I drive up. But I don't need the whole car to be shaking.

^^Yes I want this[/QUOTE]

I think you need to be in the 1.5kw range. Nice box, soundqubed HDS312, 1.5kw amp and you'll be good to go. Jeff recently installed an FU audio sub, he'll be able to tell you if it's better suited for SQ.

Sorry to say, the acoustics of a Corolla is pretty bad, He will need forms of Equalization along with time alignment and cheap head units have horrible horrible 16 bit DACs, the sound just generally fking sounds horrible source makes the biggest difference in good sound quality, You will hear a big difference going from a basic head unit to one with a 24 bit dac just from the swap alone. Whats in store for him is that 40 watts deck on 4 inch a pillar mids and an active capable 4 channel amp later on for tweets and mids for a 3 way setup lol. Its gonna sound amazing on a budget.

I'm seeing different things here.

So with that Sony HU that has the built in amp, can it get used with another amp and subs in the future or would I have to go out and buy a whole separate amp for that?

I'd go for this one:

Amazon.com : Clarion CZ702 CD Receiver with USB Control for iPod/iPhone : Electronics

Very good price, all the features, and Clarion makes excellent deck. $100 less than the sony, that can go toward an amp. I'm all for him deadening the doors, but I'm also for him actually having midbass lol

Would depend on your budget. Some music choices would also help in the recommendations.

You can use an amp with any aftermarket receiver, but the focal point of that one was its amp. If you don't use it, then you can get the cheaper one I recommended. Clarion makes excellent decks and for $120, that deck is a steal. Has EQ and time alignment along with 6ch 5v pre-outs. Paired with a decent amp, you'll be golden.
