Need Help With New Speakers For My Car

First off, I am completely new to this car audio scene. I just got my license last week and got a 2004 Toyota Corolla CE. It's nothing too special, but I won't complain as it's my first car.

I have a vision to build the car up, but I want to start with upgrading the speakers. I don't want to spend a fortune on it, just something that'll give me some bump and overall nice music. I'm thinking about spending no more than $200, but I'm willing to if the situation is something I can't pass on.

For the front speakers I'm looking for 6.5 speakers and for the rear, I'm looking for 6x9. I've been looking at starter bundle packages that comes with these speakers and an amp, seen some good deals, but I need to know more about the exact things I should be looking for.

If anyone could help, that would be amazing.

Thanks!,

Andy

No, I wouldn't consider this deal anything special. This set can be put together separately for about the same price, if not less. These are ok speakers, but you won't even see their potential without an amp. Even with an amp, still will be left with something to be desired. I'd do this stuff in pieces if you don't want to front all the cash now. Get a decent deck first, then what you can do is get an amp and just front component speakers (don't get coaxials) when you have more money. It'll be hard to get much bass out of this and your stock system probably puts out more bass than you will get with this level speaker without a sub. Is sub an option for you?

I was thinking about a sub, but thought it would be best to upgrade my speakers before that since I like listening to the music more than the bass.

But as you said, two front component speaks AND an amp? Could you forward me to anything of the like?

Appreciate the response btw!

Oh and what is a 'deck'?

So how are you doing it and what's the budget for just the amp and front speakers? Are you getting that later and the deck now? By the way, there really isn't a separation between bass and music. Bass is part of music. It isn't just those super loud systems everyone thinks of, it doesn't have to be overwhelming.

What is this 'deck'? I can drop 200-250 on component speakers and amp and deck for now.
Deck = HU = head unit = cd/media player

I'd do this setup:

JVC KD-AR765S Single DIN In-Dash CD/AM/FM Receiver with Android Music Playback via USB , App Control for Smartphone, & 2-Year Warranty

Hifonics BRX160.2 320W RMS Brutus Series Stereo Power Amplifier

As far as speakers go, talk to your installer and see if he can fit those pioneers in - they're pretty large. You can still run the rear stock speakers off the deck. In the future, you'll want to add a sub/amp.

good chance of you sounding worse than you are right now if you swap out speakers. Factory speakers are built to work on the factory headunit's preset EQ. Along with the speakers being properly sealed and baffled specifically made to work with the vehicle. IF you take an aftermarket speaker with no amp or means of equalization = horrible horrible sound. If you also dont know how to create a proper seal and baffle along with acoustical door treatments, it'll sound horrible too because if you dont do so, you wont have ANY bass coming out of the speaker. Trust me, i went through all of this with my old 03 corolla S. Again man, A simple speaker swap will make stuff sound like sh*t unless you really know what the hell you are doing ALONG with having a good head unit to match. A bad head unit will make everything else sound bad.

This is what i'm talking about for the acoustical door treatments

It takes a lot more than a speaker swap to achieve good sound. Best thing to do is to just get a new head unit and maybe a subwoofer setup. Good music starts with a good clean source and power. This head unit has a built in amplifier that will give your stock speakers more juice. You will be surprise how much better toyota stock speakers will sound when they actually get more power comming to them. Its a big difference. The head unit also has time alignment(this will make your Sh*t sound amazing like a rock concert in front of your dash if you tune it right) and a 10 band equalizer along with bluetooth audio and calling and everything else too.

Sony MEX-XB100BT CD receiver at Crutchfield.com

This one upgrade will make everything sound a lot better. Then you can add a subwoofer afterwards for some good bump with the bass without having to worry about the bass drowning out your music. Its basically a deck and amp which you dont have to have a seperate location for a dedicated amp, the onboard amp does well on power tests to on an amplifier dyno. It comes with the purchase from that site along with all install accessories needed free of charge if you specify your vehicle to them. A good head unit is the foundation of every good setup. Cant cheap out on one.

Yup, I concur with Jeff. I, too, had a 04 corolla CE and switching speakers alone actually made it sound worse. Getting an external amp helps tremendously and sealing those doors will make your speakers come alive. One of the most important thing to do first is to get a head unit so I suggest you do your research. You don't need to buy expensive speakers to get good sound but at least consider deadening your doors and trunk also if you're gonna get a sub.

I went as far as I could with the corolla and I miss it a lot actually. I know that car inside out. Racked up over 330,000 miles on it before some old man crashed into me and totaled it while I was on vacation. I had it since I was in high school so a lot of memories with that car. Just a reminder, the odometer stops ticking at 299,999 miles so if you ever get that far, you'll have to get it replaced or you can use the trip meter to keep track. IMO the 03 and 04 version was the best corolla by far. They started having a lot of electronic problems after the 05 version up to 2008. When it comes to big bass, the limiting factor was that the internal computer didn't allow you to have an alternator bigger than 160-180ish amps. I still have my Singer Alternator for it if you're interested in snatching it off of me. It was custom made for your specific corolla. I also have a rare vuteq grille that was sought after back in the days. I have a bunch of other goodies too specifically for the corolla. Let me know if you're interested in some of these parts.

That amp/ HU looks pretty solid. Could deadening the doors be done myself or would I need a professional?

Blazian, I may be interested in those parts some time in the near future. What's your asking price?

Yeah, the head unit has a lot of tuneability features and the onboard amp puts out decent power.

Deadening doors is a long step process to do but its not too hard Take steps slowly.

These are two very in detail threads that will help you in your deadening process

Thanks for these links. I'll look into them. How does the built in amp stack up against other amps out on the market?

What kinds of 'goodies' do you have? Any headlights or a fender? I'm interested to see exactly what you have.
