Need help troubleshooting amp installation

I have an old Jeep Wrangler that doesn't have locks so I installed a cheap stereo from Walmart because it could easily be stolen. I have a DUAL deck and 400 watt amp. The stereo works fine with two power bass 6x9's and two 5 inch speakers. I am trying to install a 400 watt amp so I can hear over the tires and exhaust. Everything is wired correctly. Pre amp rca's connected to the amp. Without the ground connected I get the blue light (good), but as soon as I ground it, the amp goes in to protect mode. The remote wire is connected. The positive is connected directly to the battery with a fuse in line and I'm using a good 6 guage wire for the ground on a bare metal spot of the body. I know the amp is good. It came right out of a friends car where it was working fine. Can anyone give me some tips? Could there be a short somewhere? Its driving me nuts because I install telephone systems worth tens of thousands of dollars and I can't get a $50 amp to work! Thanks
