Basically it's the idea that you want your stereo to sound like you are at a live concert..........all instruments should be in front of you, and there should be good definition between all the sounds and instruments. You should be able to differentiate the locations between the instruments. There are two things; soundstaging and imaging. The soundstage is where all the instruments are coming from (i.e. above your dash ideally). The imaging is where each instrument/voice is coming from on the soundstage (i.e. voice maybe in the middle, guitar maybe on the right side, bass guitar maybe on the left side, etc). And yes, even though most ppl's subs are behind them, the bass should sound like it is coming from infront of you also.

It's not just a simple "you need to do this to get it right". It is a lot of trial and error....but has a lot to do with the placement and aiming of the speakers and the phase interaction of the sound waves, etc etc. Generally you want the pathlengths from all the speakers to your ear to be as close to the same distance as possible (which is why ppl started using kickpanels), and things like that.

Then you have to worry about the tonality of the system, which is mainly what the EQ and crossover are mainly going to affect. Tonality is as important as the soundstaging and imaging. Tonality is basically how "real" the tones (the music or sounds) sound. Proper soundstaging and imaging is rather worthless if the tonality is way off.

I'm from the U.S. Do most people here worry about their "front stage"?.....no, there are those select few who do care, but we are a rare breed. Street beating is the "in" thing right now....just get loud; doesn't matter if it sounds good, or if you can actually hear a defined bass line....just as long as it's loud it doesn't matter.

But there is nothing better than listening to a stereo that makes you feel as if the band is right there infront of you playing!! And, IMO, the "sound quality" (tonality, soundstaging, imaging, etc) is much harder to accomplish than a street beater. Anybody can throw a few mid-level 12's in their trunk and get loud to the ear. It takes a ton of time and work and knowledge to get your car to image and soundstage properly, and have correct tonal balance.
