so im looking to get some subs, these will be my first ones. ive never heard ported or sealed but ive been reading and it seems that i want accurate SQ bass so ill be going sealed though i do listen to hip hop / rap, (eminem, kottenmouth kings, hopsin, tech nine, tupac, dr dre, akon, etc.). i have a 1994 ford ranger regular cab and a 1998 grand cherokee.

ok so for the ranger im very limited for space, the MOST room i have is .8cf or divided to .4cf and i need under 5" mounting depth, less is preferred though . my budget is also $200 for subs but i can go a bit more if its worth it. i planned on going 2 8's but will go 1 sub if its better. heres what i have it narrowed down to RE Audio REX8D4, JBL GTO804, Alpine SWR 823D, Image Dynamics ID8 D2 V.3, Boston Acoustics G108 44, JL Audio 8W3V3-4 (a little more expensive). obviously these are very entry level subs but i dont need anything too crazy.

now for the grand cherokee. i have alot more rooms and will probably be going sealed but im kinda thinking of going ported to see the difference. at first i was thinking 1 15" and 2 8's but after reading mixing subs isnt good so now im thinking something like 4 8's or maybe 4 10's, what do you guys think? i want something to fill the SUV nice. i guess same subs i mentioned ^^ before but ive added Polk Audio DB, Infinity Reference, JBL GT5, i would like to keep them around $100 each at most. thanks.

what i highlighted in red. dont waste your munz.

id reccomend going 2 12s, MAYBE 4 10s.

look into 2 ssa icon 12s for saled

or 4 ssa dcons for 10s.

also look into Dayton HO series, they are amazing sq subs for about $100 shipped off parts express .com

DC 8s are nice, but not very SQ

the Image dynamics are good subs.

RE SE (older ones) are good for sq.

fi q is pretty good.

type r's are decent..but for the money then go with

Skar vvxs.

Most important thing: with the box, go custom ported and tune low (definitely below 35 hz). Do not get the jl 8w3 I have one and it's sq is great but its downright quiet. Maybe I just haven't heard enough systems but in my experience jl will lose against anything anywhere near its price range. 2 sa-8s would be good if you must have 8s but imo you should get as much cone area as possible. You can always have too little bass but never too much. If its too loud turn the gain down lol.

thanks for the replies. finally found a forum thats given me some good imput. now i think im gonna go ported and if i dont like it i can always make a another box. ill be driving my jeep cherokee once i get my license and my ranger is my project so im more concerned about getting the jeep ready. what should i go with 2 15's? 2 12's? maybe even 4 12's? i still want SQ or SQL.

EDIT: for the ranger i only have 36" long, 12.5" high and 5" maybe 6" depth to work with so ill see what i can do about a ported box.

You can find help here, I have found that most people prefer ported for rap music. Also go with as much cone area as you can. (As long as you have space for the box). I'd start with only one car, get it done first and then you will have a better idea what you want for the other.

How much space do you want to use in the jeep? How much power are you planning on using? Are you going to change the speakers and HU also?

Another vote on going with as much cone area as you can with the space available. Shipping on the non mainstream brands to Canada may add another hundred to the sticker price on a large sub. Odds are the mainstream ones are shipped in bulk and not as much tied into them for shipping. Lately I've been playing with SSA for sql. Another idea would be a mach 5 ixl, they are made in canada, so you wont have to pay quite as much for shipping. It would be a good idea to learn what your electrical can support before you buy a sub or amp. It should be a well though out process or you throw money away burning things up.

Good Luck

I'm assuming your electrical will limit you so get the big 3 done and get an amp that doesn't do much more than 1200 wrms or so. Since you can't use a lot of power unless you spend a lot on electrical, I suggest lots of cone area to get some loudness out of the system. 2 15s would work well but 4 12s would be even better if you can fit and afford it.

For that ranger you could probably fit 2 12s max but probably less. Maybe 3 or 4 8s.
