need computer help

my laptop cd/dvd drive works intermittently at best. i'd say 80% it doesnt even get recognized by the computer. but when it is recognized it works fine.

anyone have any ideas on this? ive called compaq but they wont help due to it being one day out of warranty. a month ago they had me do a bunch of crap to it over the phone but none of it worked.

First do this:

Open My Computer

Right click on the drive and open properites

click on the hardware tab

highlight the drive

Does the device status say the drive is working properly?

thats what im saying. the drive doesnt even appear under my computer. its like its not even there. but every now and then it works and does show up under my computer

1. uninstall the drivers for it then reboot, after reboot the pc should recognize it and reinstall the drivers

2. take the drive out and clean the contacts they may have gotten dirty, it is a portable laptop

3. buy a new drive, they are cheap

4. reinstall windows

5. buy a new laptop or use an external drive

i've had 3 dvd-r/rw drives go bad in my computer, all 3 were plextor 16x's, and the problem turned out to be that my power supply was too small

sounds like what i was experiencing with them before they stopped working completely. sometimes i'd have to eject/reload the drive 2,3,5,10 times before it would read the disc, and then eventually it would only read pressed discs, and wouldn't recognize or write blank media cd OR dvd

and sometimes it would work for a few burns after reflashing the firmware, and then stop working again, but ultimately they all met their demise

could be on it's way out
