Okay I have a question for u guys. I wanted to just install my HO alt myself and save $60.00, but my dad is saying I should take it to the shop because I cant tension the belt properly. I don't see how hard it would be when I can just slide the old alt out at an angle and then slide the new one in like I took that one out without messing with the tension...

I couldn't find any great pics of my engine compartment but the ones at the bottom of this guy's page should give you an idea. The alt sits right on top, just need to take the bolts out, tilt the pulley down to let the belt off, and pull it back and out. Then I can just slide the new one in the same way. It sounds pretty **** easy to me but my dad is telling me it's harder than I think and I should take it to a shop. I don't think they will be doing anything different myself...

Please LMK if you think I can just do it that way without worrying about the belt. Thanks in advance. BTW the reason I need an answer tonight is because I scheduled an appointment to get it installed tomorrow. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

Easiest way to do it is take the tensioner out, if it's self tensioning, or loosen it all the way if it's not, so it's easy to get it off and on the new one, then you need to tighten it back down once the new one's on there. i've never done an alt, but i did a/c and power steering on my 91, and did a power steering on my 01

i don't know if there's a rule to follow to get the correct tension, i always just check the bentley

The belt should tighten itself when u put the new one on.
That's what I thought.

So it's a self tensioning tensioner on the 4.6 DOHC's? It will just pull itself to the correct tension? So can I just slide the old one out and the new one in?

Yes, that is the whole idea behind a tensioner setup.
