Nascar Renames Cup ... again

Look at the number of people in these cities. They are all amongst the heaviest populated in the US. And on the average night there isn't shiat to do. Nascar is the fastest growing sport in our country wether you DEMOCRATS like it or not. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
Of course they are heavily populated areas which is why I mentioned them as large markets //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

Obviously you've never been to a NASCAR race, nor seen one on tv.
180,000+ people at each event, 99% of them wearing some type of NASCAR clothing item. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Then there's collectibles such as posters, die cast cars, etc.

Not including the people that are just out there tailgaiting. So the number is probably closer to 250,000.
How many of these matches or meets or whatever are held a year? The Tigers alone drew in 3 million fans, and didn't even operate at 100% capacity.

32 weekends a year, fans usually show up on friday and leave sunday from what i understand

40 races total. February through november.

300,000 per event wouldn't be uncommon, with millions watching every weekend.

Sure the tigers may have drawn more total fans, but how many home games do they have? Whats the average cost of a ticket?

An average NASCAR ticket is $100, probably 5 times that of a tigers ticket. Total number of spectators doesn't mean squat when a majority of those people spend less than $20 on a ticket.

Also, remember that these are weekend events with practice rounds and qualifying on friday/saturday and the actual race on sunday. Races bring in TONS of cashflow not only for the track itself, but also surrounding restaurants, hotels, tourist attractions, etc.

IMO, the two really shouldn't be compared since they have two different markets for the most part and operate completely differently.

3 million is the amount of home fans. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif That was 4th in baseball.

Tigers are middle of the pack in ticket prices. Still there are like 29 other teams, in all different markets, not too mention Japan.

I realize 3 million is the amount of home fans. That's not what I asked.

I asked how many home games there are, and the average joe ticket price.

I edited my post above, and like I said the two really shouldn't be compared. But to simply call NASCAR a "southern" thing is just ignorance. Any company that earns billions of dollars a year deserves a little recognition.

81 home games. Detroit has a low average ticket price compared to most other teams. It's in the $20 range vs. Boston which is near $50. The team makes money on luxury seats and concessions and TV contracts. There really is no point discussing attendance when the bulk of the money is made from TV.

Like I said above, the two really can't compare. 81 games versus 1 race isn't exactly apples to apples.

Speaking of TV contracts, nascar does have a couple billion dollar contract. So it's not exactly chump change.

And if you think concession prices are bad at a baseball game, once again you've never been to a NASCAR race.

The funny thing is, is I don't even like NASCAR. I really shouldn't be defending it like this, but anybody who simply calls it a "southern" thing is just stupid.

MLB has TV contracts, in 30 US cities, including the top 10 markets in the country //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

I couldn't find good up to date data, but it looks like NASCAR did 1.4 billion in revenue in 2001 vs. 3.5 billion by MLB.

MLB also has how many games throughout the season? How many are on national tv?

Exactly.

MLB has more revenue total, but on a "per-event" basis, NASCAR slaughters everyone. A LOT more costs are involved holding a NASCAR race, thus why there are only ~40 races per season. I'm sure if everyone could fly around on jets with their cars that there would be more races.

Every race is broadcast nationwide whether its on ABC, TNT, FOX or ESPN.

I thought I saw something earlier when I was searching around that NASCAR had ~$4 billion last year while either the NFL or MLB had $7 billion.

But you have to remember, you are comparing literally THOUSANDS of baseball games to 40 NASCAR races. To try and compare the two just shouldn't happen. I was merely defending NASCAR from people who consider it purely a "southern" thing. Sure a majority of the fans are redneck idiots, but they are redneck idiots who spend a vast amount of money. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Besides, there are plenty of retards that attend baseball games as well. If I ever went to a Boston Red Sox game I would probably want to stab 99% of the people there.

Ok for the few race fans on here we all grew up listening to the "Winston Cup" series and here a few years back they changed over the Nextel cup, and just as we got used to hearing that its now the Sprint Cup
I think its going to cause nothing but confusion considering there is an entire branch of racing called sprint car racing..../rant
I agree, NASCAR fans are easily confused.

I'm sure if you have 162 matches a year, NASCAR would not draw in 180k fans per event.
